Product Description

Barrett Model 99 — Single-Shot .50 BMG Precision

The Barrett Model 99 is the most direct path to .50 BMG ownership. Introduced in 1999 as Barrett’s most accessible entry into the .50 caliber market, the Model 99 strips the platform to its essential elements: a 1-piece aluminum extrusion receiver, an interrupted buttress-threaded bolt, a match-quality trigger, and a match-grade barrel in a single-shot design with the fewest moving parts of any Barrett rifle. The result is a rifle that weighs 23–25 lbs (significantly lighter than the M82A1), disassembles tool-free with three quick-release pins, and delivers the same .50 BMG capability at a fraction of the cost of the semi-automatic platform.

In 2001, a shooter set a world record at 1,000 yards using a Model 99, firing a 5-shot group measuring 4.09 inches. That is approximately 0.39 MOA at 1,000 yards from a production rifle. The Model 99 is not a compromise — it is a purpose-built precision instrument that happens to cost less than the semi-automatic alternatives.

The Case for Single-Shot

The most common question about the Model 99 is why choose single-shot over the M82A1’s semi-automatic capability. The answer depends on what you’re doing with the rifle. For long-range precision shooting, anti-materiel work, and big bore competition, the single-shot design offers real advantages: fewer moving parts means fewer things to maintain and fewer variables affecting accuracy. The absence of a magazine well and feeding mechanism allows the action geometry to be optimized purely around the chamber and bolt lockup. The Model 99’s interrupted buttress-thread bolt provides exceptionally strong and consistent lock-up — the same design principle used in heavy artillery. For shooters who reload their own .50 BMG or .416 Barrett, single-shot operation also makes brass recovery and inspection easier.

The M82A1 is the right choice when you need semi-automatic follow-up shots. For precision work at distance where the first round matters most, the Model 99 is a legitimate and often superior choice.

What the LP MK4 Bundle Includes

Select Model 99 variants ship bundled with a Leupold Mark 4 riflescope. The Leupold Mark 4 is a military-grade variable-power optic used by US armed forces. A standalone Leupold Mark 4 retails for approximately $1,200–$1,500 depending on configuration. The bundle represents real value — a scope-ready system out of the box, without needing to separately source, mount, and zero an optic.

We recommend having our gunsmith verify mounting torque and check scope level before your first range session — available at no charge on any rifle purchased from us.

Construction Details

Receiver — 1-piece aluminum extrusion with integral M1913 rail. The single-piece construction eliminates the upper/lower receiver joint variability found in two-piece designs, contributing to the platform’s exceptional accuracy potential.

Bolt — Interrupted buttress-thread design. The interrupted thread pattern allows the bolt to be inserted and rotated into lockup in a fraction of a turn, while the buttress thread profile maximizes the contact area and shear strength of the lockup — the same principle used in artillery breech design. S-7 tool steel construction.

Barrel — Match-grade. The 29″ fluted barrel reduces weight vs. the 32″ heavy barrel while maintaining stiffness. The 32″ heavy barrel maximizes velocity and provides the stiffest possible platform for sustained precision fire.

Muzzle brake — 3-port high-efficiency design. Reduces felt recoil to approximately the level of a 12-gauge 3.5″ load — substantial but manageable, not punishing.

Quick-release assembly pins — Three pins allow complete tool-free disassembly and reassembly. The rifle breaks down for transport and reassembles without disturbing zero.

Rear hand grip — Accepts Barrett’s optional adjustable monopod for precision supported fire positions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why buy the Model 99 instead of the M82A1?

Lower price, lighter weight (23–25 lbs vs. 32+ lbs), simpler maintenance, and in some cases better inherent accuracy from the single-shot, optimized-for-precision design. The tradeoff is semi-automatic follow-up shots. For precision work, range shooting, and big bore competition, many shooters prefer the Model 99. For anti-materiel applications requiring rapid follow-up shots, the M82A1 is the better choice.

What is the effective range of the Model 99?

The Model 99 is capable of precision fire to 1,800+ meters against materiel targets and 1,000+ yard point accuracy against hard targets. The 2001 world record 4.09″ group at 1,000 yards (0.39 MOA) from a production Model 99 demonstrates the platform’s accuracy ceiling. Practical civilian use: 500–1,500 yards depending on range availability and optic.

How much does .50 BMG ammunition cost?

Standard .50 BMG FMJ runs $3–$5 per round. Premium match ammo from Hornady, Barnes, and Black Hills runs $6–$10+ per round. The .416 Barrett is similar in price but less widely available. We carry .50 BMG and can order .416 Barrett — call ahead to check current stock at (817) 393-4000.

Is the Model 99 legal in California?

The .50 BMG Model 99 is subject to California’s .50 BMG restrictions on semi-automatic rifles. However, the Model 99 is a bolt-action single-shot rifle, not a semi-automatic. California’s .50 BMG restriction (AB 50 / Penal Code 30515) specifically targets semi-automatic centerfire rifles — single-shot bolt actions are not covered by this restriction. Confirm with your local FFL and your own legal research before purchasing.

What optic goes on the Model 99?

The 13.75″ M1913 rail with 27 MOA cant accepts standard scope rings. Most shooters run a variable-power optic in the 5-25× or higher range. The LP MK4 bundle variants come with a Leupold Mark 4 pre-mounted. For non-bundle variants, we can assist with optic selection and mounting at our Roanoke, TX shop.

Does the monopod come with the rifle?

No — the rear hand grip accepts an optional Barrett adjustable monopod (sold separately). We can order the monopod at the same time as the rifle — call us at (817) 393-4000.
