This year at SHOT Show 2017 Industry Day at the Range, Heckler & Koch rolled out some fresh updates to their popular VP9 pistol lineup. We got a firsthand look at the new tactical model, designed with suppressor use in mind, along with some eye-catching new color options.
Key Takeaways
- The new VP9 Tactical model features a threaded barrel and suppressor-height sights.
- It’s available now, with an MSRP between $719 and $819.
- New color options include Flat Dark Earth (RAL8000) and Gray.
- The VP9 has been a major success for HK in the commercial market.
- HK is considering future expansions, possibly including a compact model.
The New VP9 Tactical Model
Dale from HK gave us the rundown on the new VP9 Tactical. The main draw here is the threaded barrel, which is ready to accept a suppressor. To go along with that, it comes with suppressor-height sights. This means you can actually see your sights over the top of a suppressor when it’s attached, which is pretty neat.
Other than those additions, the gun is pretty much the same as the standard VP9 that people have come to know and like. It’s a solid striker-fired pistol, and HK has really hit a home run with it.
Suppressor Sights and Threading
When it comes to the sights, HK is actually sending out the VP9 Tactical with basic night sights for now. They mentioned there are a lot of different options out there on the market, and they’re still figuring out exactly what they want to include as a standard offering. The gun we saw at the demo had some tall sights from KAC, which looked pretty good, but they haven’t made a final decision on what will come standard.
As for the barrel threading, it’s a left-hand twist. Dale mentioned that most suppressor manufacturers out there make a suppressor that will work with it. He specifically pointed out that Gemtech and SilencerCo would likely have options available, and we even saw a SilencerCo suppressor on the gun at the range.
Availability and Pricing
Good news for anyone interested: the VP9 Tactical is available right now. You don’t have to wait for it. The estimated price, or MSRP, is going to be somewhere between $719 and $819. So, it’s a bit of a step up from the standard model, but you’re getting that threaded barrel and suppressor-ready setup.
New Color Options for the VP9
Beyond the tactical version, HK is also introducing two new colors for the VP9. One is a Flat Dark Earth, which they call RAL8000. The other is a Gray option. These new colors give customers more choices to personalize their firearm.
The Success of the VP9 and Future Plans
Dale also touched on how well the VP9 has been doing. He said it’s been one of their highest-selling guns in a long time on the commercial market. It seems like HK’s entry into the striker-fired handgun world has been a big success.
Looking ahead, HK is thinking about expanding the VP9 line even further. Dale mentioned hoping for a VP9 carbine version down the line, similar to what they have with the P30. On the government side, they’re hoping for something in between the size of the SK model and the standard VP9, maybe something around the size of a P3000. No concrete timelines were given for these potential future models, but it’s interesting to hear what HK might have in the works.
It was really cool to see the VP9 Tactical set up with a suppressor and those tall sights. For those of us who don’t often get to shoot suppressed firearms, it’s a real treat. We’ll be back with more coverage from SHOT Show all week!
