Choosing the right optic for your setup

Budget honestly for optic and mount together. A quality optic on a cheap mount is a bad combination — the optic will not hold zero under recoil. Geissele Super Precision and LaRue Tactical QD mounts are what we put on customer builds most often. They add to the cost but do not give you problems.

For magnified optics: first focal plane (FFP) reticles scale with magnification, so BDC marks are accurate at any power. Second focal plane (SFP) reticles are only accurate at max power. FFP is the correct choice for a variable magnification scope. Some exceptions exist for competition use.

Night vision is a category worth a question before you order — there is a wide range of quality and price, and the wrong purchase at the wrong price point is easy to make. Send us a message and we will help you pick the right unit, then ship it to your door.

Where to start

Match the optic to the distance you actually shoot. Inside 100 yards and moving, a red dot wins on speed. Past 300, you want magnification and a reticle you can hold with. In between, an LPVO does both jobs at some cost in weight. Whatever you pick, budget for the mount — a good scope on a bad ring shoots worse than a modest scope mounted properly.
