What Is a Daniel Defense Upper Receiver Group?

A Daniel Defense Upper Receiver Group (URG) includes the complete upper assembly: upper receiver, barrel, handguard, gas system, and bolt carrier group. It ships as a serialized non-firearm component — meaning it can be ordered and shipped directly without going through an FFL in most states (check your local laws). To build a complete rifle, you pair a DD URG with a mil-spec lower receiver of your choice.

DD uppers are the same components Daniel Defense installs in their complete rifles — the same Cold Hammer Forged barrels, the same RIS II or M-LOK handguards, the same BCGs. If you want a DD upper on a lower you already own, or you’re building a Daniel Defense-quality rifle around a custom lower, DD URGs are the professional-grade path.

Daniel Defense Upper Models

MK18 URGs

The MK18 URG is the same upper assembly used in the SOCOM MK18 CQBR program — a 10.3-inch Cold Hammer Forged barrel, RIS II or M-LOK handguard, and optimized gas system for 5.56 NATO from a short barrel. Available in Black and FDE. Pairing an MK18 URG to a registered SBR lower creates a legitimate MK18 SBR; pairing it to a pistol lower creates an AR pistol. Western Sport can advise on both configurations.

M4A1 URGs

The M4A1 URG replicates the upper receiver group on the U.S. Army M4A1 service rifle — 14.5-inch CHF barrel, mil-spec BCG, and the handguard geometry used on military issue guns. Available in Black with RIS II rail. The gold standard for mil-spec clone builds.

DD4 RIII URGs

The DD4 RIII URG brings the modern DD4 RIII improvements — full ambidextrous bolt catch, updated geometry, lighter profile — to the upper-only format. For builders who want the latest DD4 platform without buying a complete rifle.

DDM4 V7 / V7 Pro URGs

DDM4 V7 URGs are available in 5.56 NATO with 16-inch CHF barrels and M-LOK handguards, and in the V7 Pro 18-inch precision variant. The most popular DD upper for builds combining a DD upper with a quality mil-spec lower.

DD5 V3/V4/V5 URGs (.308 / 6.5 Creedmoor / .260)

DD5 upper receiver groups bring Daniel Defense AR-10 engineering to the upper-only market. Available in 7.62×51, 6.5 Creedmoor, and .260 Remington. Compatible with DPMS-pattern AR-10 lowers. The DD5 URG is the fastest way to upgrade an AR-10 lower to Daniel Defense barrel quality.

NFA Considerations for Short-Barrel Uppers

A 10.3-inch MK18 URG installed on a registered lower SBR is perfectly legal. Installing a short-barrel upper on a standard pistol lower creates an AR pistol. Installing a short-barrel upper on a rifle lower is illegal without proper NFA registration.
