Daniel Defense Uppers
Daniel Defense Upper Receiver Groups, Shipped Direct
A Daniel Defense Upper Receiver Group is a complete upper assembly: upper receiver, cold hammer forged barrel, handguard, gas system and bolt carrier group, hand assembled and test fired at the factory. It is not a firearm and it carries no serial number, so it requires no FFL transfer and no Form 4473. We ship it UPS to your door.
What it does not include is a lower receiver, trigger or stock. You supply those, usually a lower you already own. That is what makes a URG the cheapest honest way onto the Daniel Defense platform: you are paying for the barrel and the rail, not for a second lower receiver you do not need.

Which Daniel Defense Upper Should You Buy?
MK18 URG — 10.3″
The short one. Same upper assembly as the SOCOM MK18 CQBR program: 10.3″ cold hammer forged chrome-moly-vanadium barrel, 1:7 twist, chrome lined, HP and MPI tested, carbine-length gas with a pinned low-profile block, and the Daniel Defense RIS II MK18 free-float quad rail. An M16-profile bolt carrier group is included, MP tested with a properly staked gas key. Available in Flat Dark Earth and Black.
Understand the trade before you buy: a 10.3″ barrel gives up roughly 350 fps of muzzle velocity against a 16″. 55gr M193 leaves a 10.3″ at about 2,700-2,800 fps versus about 3,100 fps from a 16″, and M193 needs roughly 2,700 fps on impact to fragment reliably, which is why 77gr Mk262 is the better load out of a short barrel. You are buying handling, not ballistics. Full MK18 breakdown here.
M4A1 URG — 14.5″
The upper receiver group off the U.S. Army M4A1 service rifle: 14.5″ CHF barrel, mil-spec BCG, RIS II rail, issue geometry. This is the clone builder’s default. At 14.5″ with a pinned and welded muzzle device it is a 16″ rifle in the eyes of the law, so it goes on a normal rifle lower with nothing to file.
DD4 RIII and M4A1 RIII URGs
The current-generation DD4 platform in upper-only form: ambidextrous bolt catch, revised geometry, lighter M-LOK rail in place of the RIS II quad. Lighter and slimmer than the RIS II uppers, and the choice if you are building around modern furniture rather than a period-correct clone.
V7 and V7 S URGs
16″ 5.56 with an M-LOK rail. The most straightforward upgrade path: it drops on any mil-spec lower, needs no paperwork of any kind, and it is the least expensive way to get a Daniel Defense cold hammer forged barrel onto a rifle you already own.
300S URG — 300 Blackout
A 300 Blackout upper on the DDM4 Rail 9.0 Picatinny quad rail. Built for suppressed subsonic work. With the federal suppressor transfer tax now at $0, this is a materially cheaper build than it was a year ago.
MK12 URG — 18″ SPR
The Special Purpose Rifle upper. 18″ barrel, rifle-length gas, built for precision at distance rather than close quarters. A different job entirely from the MK18.
DD5 URGs — .308, 6.5 Creedmoor, .260
Daniel Defense AR-10 uppers, compatible with DPMS-pattern AR-10 lowers. The fastest way to put a Daniel Defense barrel on a large-frame lower.
Which Lower Does It Go On?
This is the question we field most, and getting it wrong is a felony rather than a mistake, so here it is plainly.
A 16″ or longer upper — V7, V7 S, MK12, or a pinned-and-welded 14.5″ M4A1 — goes on any lower you own. Rifle, pistol, registered SBR. Nothing to file.
A short upper, such as the 10.3″ MK18, has two legal homes. On a registered SBR lower, meaning one with an approved Form 1 or Form 4 already in hand. Or on a pistol lower: a lower that has never been assembled as a rifle, wearing a brace or nothing at all. Both are lawful and neither requires anything further.
It does not go on a standard rifle lower. A rifle lower plus a sub-16″ barrel is a short-barreled rifle, and possessing one without an approved form first is a federal felony. This is not a technicality anybody wins.
The arithmetic on the SBR route changed on January 1, 2026: the federal making and transfer tax for SBRs, SBSs, AOWs and suppressors dropped from $200 to $0. The Form 1, the fingerprints, the photograph, the background check and the registration are all unchanged. The $200 is gone. Western Sport has held an SOT/Class III license since 2007 and we file this paperwork in house. Call 817-393-4000.
Where We Cannot Ship
Federal law does not restrict upper receiver groups, but several states restrict short-barrel or feature-configured uppers under their own assault weapon statutes, and some cities go further than their state does. If you are in California, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maryland, Washington, Illinois, Delaware, Hawaii or the District of Columbia, call us at 817-393-4000 before you order and we will tell you straight whether we can ship it. We would rather have the conversation than process the return.

Common Questions
Do I need an FFL to buy a Daniel Defense upper receiver group?
No. An upper receiver group is not a firearm under federal law, because the lower receiver is the serialized part, so there is no FFL transfer, no Form 4473 and no dealer fee. It ships to your door. State law can still restrict what configuration you may possess, so see the section above if you are in a restricted state.
Is a URG the same thing as a complete upper?
Yes. URG stands for Upper Receiver Group. It is the upper receiver, barrel, handguard, gas system and bolt carrier group as one assembly. It does not include a lower receiver, trigger, buffer tube or stock.
Does the bolt carrier group come with it?
Yes, on every Daniel Defense URG we stock: an M16-profile, MP-tested, chrome-lined BCG with a properly staked gas key. Charging handles are sold separately.
Can I put a Daniel Defense MK18 upper on any lower?
No. The 10.3″ MK18 upper goes on a registered SBR lower or on a pistol lower. Putting it on a standard rifle lower creates an unregistered short-barreled rifle, which is a federal felony. We are an SOT and can file the Form 1 for you. The tax is $0 as of January 2026.
Will a Daniel Defense upper fit a non-Daniel Defense lower?
Yes. Daniel Defense uppers are mil-spec and fit any standard AR-15 lower receiver, whether that is Aero, BCM, Colt, Anderson or a stripped lower you built yourself. DD5 uppers are large-frame and require a DPMS-pattern AR-10 lower.
How long does shipping take?
In-stock uppers ship the next business day by UPS. Because no FFL is involved there is no dealer to coordinate with and no transfer appointment. It arrives at your address like any other package.

Why buy Daniel Defense Uppers from Western Sport
Daniel Defense holds multiple SOPMOD II contracts with U.S. Special Operations Command. The DDM4 V7, MK18, and M4A1 civilian variants share the same CHF barrel process and core tolerances as those military builds. When a customer asks why Daniel Defense costs more than a budget AR, that is the answer.
Western Sport is staffed by gunsmiths and competitive shooters — people who actually use the gear we sell. When you ask us about Daniel Defense Uppers AR-15 rifles, pistols, and upper receivers, you get an answer from someone who has handled the product, not someone reading off a spec sheet.
We handle Daniel Defense Uppers transfers, orders, and service in-house. If you have a Daniel Defense Uppers product that needs gunsmithing work — trigger work, threading, Cerakote — we do that on-site. Call (817) 393-4000 to discuss your specific needs.
