The Daniel Defense M4 URG MK18 FDE is a complete 5.56 NATO upper receiver group finished in Flat Dark Earth and built around the same 10.3″ barrel and Daniel Defense RIS II MK18 rail system used on the iconic MK18 platform issued to U.S. special operations units. It drops onto any Mil-Spec AR-15 lower receiver to create a compact, maneuverable carbine for home defense, competition, or a registered SBR build.
Like every Daniel Defense upper, this assembly is hand assembled, quality assurance tested, and test fired before it leaves the factory. As a result, it runs the way a duty-grade MK18 upper should, right out of the box.

What is the RIS II rail system?
The RIS II (Rail Interface System II) is Daniel Defense’s free-float quad rail handguard. On this MK18 configuration, it runs nearly the full length of the 10.3″ barrel with a continuous top Picatinny rail and KeyMod slots at the 3, 6, and 9 o’clock positions for mounting optics, lights, lasers, and grips. It is the same handguard configuration used on the Daniel Defense MK18 issued to U.S. special operations units.
Do I need NFA paperwork for this upper?
Not if you install it on a pistol-configured AR-15 lower with no stock attached — that keeps the build classified as a pistol. However, installing this 10.3″ upper on a rifle-configured lower, or adding a stock, creates a short-barreled rifle. In that case, you must have an approved ATF Form 1 or Form 4 on file first.

The MK18 URG was exactly what I would expect from Daniel Defense. I did find it odd that it was not in a DD box. Every other one I’ve seen comes straight from DD in it’s own packaging. This was in a plastic bag, diagonally placed in a square box packed with craft paper. It had a couple of little dings. But, since I intend to shoot it, and not look at it, that’s no big deal. Just being tossed in a regular box was a surprise though.

I just got home from my first range trip running this upper. Threw an Aimpoint T-1 on top and a pistol build on the bottom. Ran about 150 rounds without a single issue and accurate as can be. I’m certainly satisfied with the product but disappointed in the fact that it arrived a little beat up due to the fact that it was shipped wrapped in brown paper instead of the manufacturer’s packaging.

I was looking for months on getting my hands on the DD MK18 pistol, but unfortunately I couldn’t find a single retailer that had it in stock complete (or if I did I would have been dropping over 2.5k). So I decided at that point ill buy the DD upper and put whatever high quality lower I want on it. NOPE… Now I can’t even find the upper!
