Q: Will a 5.56 upper work for 300 Blackout?
A: No. The barrel is chambered for the cartridge, so 300 Blackout needs a 300 Blackout barrel — that is exactly what this upper is. What does carry over is your lower, your buffer system and your magazines, which is the whole appeal of the cartridge. One serious warning: a 300 Blackout round will chamber in a 5.56 barrel, and firing it there can destroy the rifle and injure the shooter. Mark your magazines and never mix the two on the bench.
Q: Does 300 BLK hit harder than 5.56?
A: At short range and out of a short barrel, yes — it throws a much heavier bullet and retains more energy where a 5.56 out of a 10in barrel is losing velocity fast. Past roughly 200 yards 5.56 pulls ahead and stays ahead, because it starts far faster and sheds velocity more slowly. 300 Blackout was designed to perform out of a short barrel and to run subsonic under a suppressor. That is what it is best at.
Q: What is the best 300 Blackout upper?
A: The honest answer is that it depends on what you are building. For a suppressed 10.3in setup, the things that matter are a cold hammer forged barrel with a twist rate fast enough to stabilise heavy subsonic bullets (1:8 or faster), a properly tuned pistol-length gas system, and a bolt carrier group that has been magnetic-particle inspected. This upper has all three. A cheaper upper will usually save money on the barrel and the gas system, which are the two things you cannot easily fix later.
Q: Which Daniel Defense upper is best?
A: For 300 Blackout, the 300S in 10.3in is the one most people want — it is the balance point between suppressed performance and handling. The 7in PDW is for maximum compactness and gives up velocity to get there. If you are building in 5.56 instead, the V7 and M4A1 uppers are the equivalent picks. Q: Do I need NFA paperwork for this upper?
A: It depends on your lower receiver. Installing this upper on a pistol-configured lower with no stock keeps the build classified as a pistol. However, installing it on a rifle-configured lower, or adding a stock, creates a short-barreled rifle and requires an approved ATF Form 1 first.
This is a short upper. It goes on a registered SBR lower — one with an
approved Form 1 or Form 4 already in hand — or on a pistol lower that has
never been assembled as a rifle. Both are lawful and neither needs anything further filed.
It does not go on a standard rifle lower. A rifle lower with a barrel under
16 inches is a short-barreled rifle, and possessing one without an approved form first is a
federal felony. A 14.5″ upper counts as a rifle only when the muzzle device is
permanently pinned and welded to 16 inches.
