Product Description
The SIONICS Ambidextrous Safety Selector – Short is a dual-sided safety for AR-15 and AR-10 lower receivers, designed with a short lever on the right side for a low-profile reach. SIONICS Weapon Systems builds this selector to give both right- and left-handed shooters reliable manual-of-arms access without adding bulk past the trigger guard.
The short lever configuration suits shooters who use a high thumb-over-bore grip or who mount optics with large housings that can contact a full-length lever. It also works well for builds where a standard safety would interfere with gloved hands or packed gear.
This selector installs into any mil-spec lower receiver fire control pocket. It replaces the factory safety and uses the same detent and spring already in your lower.
Key Facts
- Brand: SIONICS Weapon Systems
- Product name: SIONICS Ambidextrous Safety Selector – Short
- SKU: SWS-AMBI-S
- Configuration: Ambidextrous with short right-side lever
Why Choose a Short Ambidextrous Safety
A short-lever ambi safety keeps the right-side control close to the receiver. Shooters who wrap their thumb over the top of the grip often find that a full-length lever digs into the thumb knuckle during recoil or rapid strings. The short lever clears that space while still giving positive engagement when you sweep it with your trigger finger.
Left-side operation remains unchanged. The selector shaft rotates ninety degrees from safe to fire, and both levers move together. You get the same tactile throw whether you manipulate it from the left or the right.
Installation and Fit
This selector drops into any mil-spec AR lower that accepts a standard safety. You will reuse the detent and detent spring from your existing fire control group. The selector shaft indexes into the lower’s safety bore and is retained by the detent under spring pressure.
If you are building a new lower or upgrading a factory trigger, confirm that your detent and spring are in place before you install the selector. A missing detent will let the selector rotate past ninety degrees and may damage the trigger pack.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Will the SIONICS short ambidextrous safety fit my AR-15 lower receiver?
A: This selector fits any mil-spec AR-15 or AR-10 lower receiver with a standard safety pocket. It uses the same detent and spring as a GI safety, so if your lower accepts a mil-spec fire control group, it will accept this selector.
Q: What does “short” mean on this SIONICS ambi safety?
A: The short designation refers to the right-side lever length. It extends less far from the receiver than a standard-length lever, which reduces interference with high thumb grips and keeps the profile low inside the trigger guard.
Q: Can I use this safety selector with any AR trigger group?
A: Yes, this selector works with mil-spec and aftermarket drop-in triggers that follow the TDP fire control pocket dimensions. The selector shaft rotates between the safe and fire positions like a GI safety, so any trigger designed for a standard safety will function normally.
Q: Is the SIONICS ambi safety reversible for left-handed shooters?
A: The selector is already ambidextrous. Both the left and right levers are active, so left-handed and right-handed shooters can manipulate it from either side of the receiver without modification.
Q: Do I need special tools to install this safety selector?
A: You do not need special tools. A punch or screwdriver tip will compress the detent during installation. Make sure the detent and spring are seated in the lower’s detent hole before you slide the selector shaft into place.
Q: Does Western Sport offer gunsmithing services for AR lower builds in Roanoke?
A: Yes, we have an on-site gunsmith and handle AR builds, part installation, and custom work at our Roanoke location. Call 817-393-4000 to schedule service or ask about lead times for your project.
