Shotgun ammunition and setup

For home defense, 00 buckshot is the standard recommendation. Nine pellets of .33 caliber in a single trigger pull. At home defense distances โ€” inside 25 yards โ€” buckshot spreads only a few inches, so you still have to aim. A weapon light is non-negotiable; know your target before you pull the trigger.

Short-barrel shotguns (SBS) under 18″ require NFA registration and a $200 tax stamp. Standard 18.5″ and 20″ barrels are Title I firearms with no special paperwork. We can walk you through NFA process if a Mossberg Shockwave or SBS interests you.

Ammunition selection matters for semi-auto shotguns โ€” they cycle better with heavier loads. Pump actions are more tolerant of light target loads versus heavy defensive loads. Test your defensive ammo through your shotgun before you trust your life to it.

Western Sport carries shotguns for every job โ€” home defense, waterfowl and upland hunting, turkey, and clays โ€” from pump guns to semi-autos to over/unders. We’re a Roanoke, TX FFL and our staff shoots, so you’ll get a straight answer on what actually fits your use and your budget.

What we stock

12- and 20-gauge pump-actions built for defense and hard field use, gas- and inertia-driven semi-autos that soak up recoil, tactical models with extended tubes and rails, and sporting guns for the range. Common gauges and barrel lengths in stock, with more available to order. Stock up on shotgun shells while you’re here.

Choosing a shotgun

Start with the job. A pump 12-gauge is the do-everything home-defense and utility gun โ€” simple, reliable, affordable. A semi-auto shoots softer and faster for waterfowl and clays. Gauge is about recoil and payload: 12 hits hardest, 20 is lighter and easier for smaller shooters, .410 is lightest. Fit matters more on a shotgun than almost any other firearm โ€” length of pull and how it points decide whether you actually hit with it. Handle a few before you commit.
