NFA update: October 9, 2026
ATF no longer requires a Form 4, tax stamp, fingerprints, photos or registration for suppressors, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns or AOWs. They now transfer on a standard Form 4473 with a background check. What changed →
Suppressors, short-barreled rifles and other NFA items are legal to own in Texas, and as of October 9, 2026 buying most of them is as simple as buying any other gun. Western Sport has been an SOT / Class III dealer since 2007.
What Counts as an NFA Item
The National Firearms Act covers suppressors (silencers), short-barreled rifles (SBRs), short-barreled shotguns (SBSs), any other weapons (AOWs), machine guns and destructive devices. The rules now split into two groups.
- Suppressors, SBRs, SBSs and AOWs: the federal tax went to $0 on January 1, 2026, and since October 9, 2026 ATF no longer requires a Form 4, fingerprints, photos or registration. Dealers transfer them on a Form 4473 with a NICS background check.
- Machine guns and destructive devices: unchanged. Full NFA process, ATF approval and the $200 tax.
How Buying a Suppressor Works Now
- Pick your can. Order online or contact us.
- Choose where to collect it. Texas buyers can pick it up from us or use an SOT dealer near them. Outside Texas, we ship it to an SOT dealer in your state.
- Form 4473 and background check. Bring a valid government photo ID. The NICS check runs the same way it does for any gun.
- Take it home. When the check clears, it is yours. No ATF wait.
Every step is laid out on how buying a suppressor works at Western Sport.
What Still Applies
- State law. Some states ban suppressors or SBRs, and some only allow ones registered with ATF. Your state’s rules decide what you can buy.
- Crossing state lines with an SBR or SBS still needs an approved ATF Form 5320.20.
- Age and eligibility. You must be 21 or older for a suppressor and legally allowed to own a firearm.
- Voluntary registration. ATF still accepts Form 4s if you want an item registered. Ask us and we will file one for you.
