Product Description

Update, October 9, 2026: ATF no longer requires a Form 4, tax stamp, fingerprints or registration for suppressors, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns or AOWs. They now transfer on a standard Form 4473 with a background check. Anything below that mentions a Form 4, a wait or a tax stamp was written before this change. What changed

The Aero Precision .30 Caliber Crush Washer is a single-use washer designed to time and secure muzzle devices on .30 caliber rifle barrels.

A crush washer compresses when you torque down a muzzle brake, flash hider, or compensator. This compression allows you to align the device correctly while creating a tight seal against the barrel shoulder. The washer deforms permanently during installation, which is why you need a fresh one each time you remove and reinstall a muzzle device.

This washer is sized for .30 caliber applications. It fits the most common thread pitches found on AR-10 pattern rifles and bolt-action rifles chambered in .308 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, and similar cartridges.

How a Crush Washer Works

When you install a muzzle device, the crush washer sits between the device and the barrel shoulder. As you tighten the device, the washer compresses and deforms. This lets you stop tightening exactly when the ports or slots on your brake or compensator point in the right direction.

The washer also fills minor gaps and creates a gas seal. Without it, carbon fouling can seep between the threads and make removal difficult later. Because the washer crushes permanently, you should replace it every time you remove a muzzle device, even if the old one looks intact.

What to Know Before Installing

Thread pitch varies by barrel manufacturer. Most .308 AR-10 barrels use 5/8×24 threads, but some use different pitches. The crush washer must fit over your barrel threads and seat flat against the shoulder. If you’re unsure about your barrel’s thread pitch or the correct installation torque, send us a message.

Some gunsmiths and builders prefer peel washers or shims for muzzle device timing, especially on precision rifles. Crush washers are simpler and work well for most applications, but they can leave a small gap between the device and barrel shoulder. Choose the method that suits your build and accuracy requirements.

Using Crush Washers with Different Muzzle Devices

This washer works with any .30 caliber muzzle device that uses a crush washer for timing. Common examples include A2-style flash hiders, three-prong flash hiders, muzzle brakes, and linear compensators. Each device will specify whether it requires a crush washer, peel washer, or shim kit.

Single-chamber brakes and compensators usually time easily with one washer. Multi-baffle brakes with specific port orientations may need careful attention during installation. Always test-fit the device before applying thread locker or final torque.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between a crush washer and a peel washer for muzzle devices?

A: A crush washer compresses permanently when you torque the muzzle device, while a peel washer is a stack of thin washers you remove one at a time to achieve timing. Crush washers are simpler and faster to install. Peel washers and shim kits allow the muzzle device to sit flush against the barrel shoulder, which some builders prefer for precision rifles.

Q: Can I reuse a crush washer if I remove my muzzle device?

A: No, crush washers are single-use components. Once compressed, they cannot return to their original shape and will not seal or time correctly on a second installation. Always use a fresh washer when reinstalling a muzzle device.

Q: Will this crush washer work on a 5.56 or .223 barrel?

A: No, this washer is sized for .30 caliber barrels. Barrels chambered in 5.56 NATO or .223 Remington typically use 1/2×28 threads and require a smaller crush washer. Using the wrong size can result in improper fit and unsafe installation.

Q: How tight should I torque a muzzle device with a crush washer?

A: Most muzzle devices require 15 to 25 foot-pounds of torque, but the exact specification depends on the device manufacturer. Tighten until the ports or slots align correctly and the device feels snug. If you are unsure, send us a message to confirm the correct torque for your specific muzzle device.

Q: Do I need thread locker when using a crush washer?

A: Many builders apply a small amount of high-temperature thread locker to the barrel threads before installing the muzzle device. This prevents the device from loosening under recoil and heat. The crush washer alone does not lock the threads; it only provides timing and a gas seal.
