The Rare Breed FRT-15L3 is a drop-in forced reset trigger for the AR-15 platform, and it is the third-generation refinement of the design that started the whole FRT category. It uses the movement of the bolt carrier to physically force the trigger to reset, which means your finger gets back to a firing position faster than it could on its own. The rate of fire is dramatic. The mechanism is not.
How a forced reset trigger actually works
This is the part that gets misreported constantly, so here it is plainly: the FRT-15 fires one round per pull of the trigger. A locking bar prevents the hammer from following the carrier, and the carrier’s return stroke drives the trigger forward against your finger, resetting it. You still have to release and pull for every single shot. That is the legal and mechanical distinction from a machine gun, which fires more than one round from a single function of the trigger under 26 USC 5845(b).
Owner and gunsmith Lance Rankin wrote about the Senate exchange where the ATF director explained exactly this point: the law is the law. Worth reading before you buy, because it is the clearest short explanation of why rate of fire is not the legal test.
Legal status, honestly stated
The Rare Breed FRT has been through classification fights, seizures, litigation and a Department of Justice settlement. As of this writing it sits on solid legal ground at the federal level, and it is the specific design with that recognized status. A knockoff forced reset design does not inherit it.
State and local law is a separate question. Several states restrict or ban rate-increasing devices regardless of federal status, and this area of law moves. What it needs to run right
An FRT asks more of the rifle than a standard trigger does. It wants a properly gassed system, a quality bolt carrier group with a clean, correctly staked carrier, and a buffer and spring combination that lets the carrier return with authority. Undergassed or worn rifles are where people run into trouble, and the trigger takes the blame. If yours is marginal, a quality NP3-coated bolt carrier group and a look at the gas system is the place to start. We do that work on the bench here in Roanoke.
