The 590A1 is the military-specification version of the Mossberg 500 series, featuring a heavy-walled barrel, metal trigger guard, metal safety, and aluminum receiver. At 14″ barrel length, this is an NFA Short Barrel Shotgun — compact, fast-handling, and powerful for close-range applications.

590A1: Mil-Spec Mossberg

The 590A1 is the Mossberg shotgun that passed U.S. Military MIL-S-3443 testing — the same test that disqualified other shotgun designs. The heavy-walled barrel, reinforced action, and parkerized/metal components make the 590A1 the most durable iteration of the Mossberg pump-action platform. In the 14″ SBS configuration, it becomes a compact NFA close-quarters weapon.

What is an SBS? A Short Barrel Shotgun has a barrel under 18″ or overall length under 26″. These are NFA-regulated items requiring Form 4 transfer, background check, and $200 tax stamp — now $0 under OBBBA.
