The short version
- We are the SOT. Western Sport holds a Class 3 SOT, so the suppressor is transferred from our own inventory. You are not waiting on a third shop to receive it first.
- We do the Form 4 at our counter. The ATF forms and the eForm submission all happen here. You are not left to work out the paperwork on your own.
- No Form 4 fee on anything you buy from us. Buy the suppressor or NFA item here and we complete and file your Form 4 at no charge. If you bought it elsewhere and are transferring it in, our fee for that is $200.
- Fingerprints and photo: Grapevine, and you only do it once. We send you to get digital prints and a passport photo. They are yours to keep and you can use them at any gun store from then on, so it is not a trip you repeat every time you buy.
- eForm 4, not paper. We file electronically, which is the faster of the two lanes.
- Individual or trust, either is fine. We will walk you through which one actually suits you rather than pushing a trust you do not need.
- Nothing to pay ATF. The $200 NFA transfer tax on suppressors is $0 under current law.
- One visit to buy, one visit to collect. In between, you wait for ATF.
- Where: 4000 Haslet Roanoke Road, Suite 111, Roanoke, TX 76262. Call 817-393-4000.
What actually happens, step by step
1. You pick the can
Come in, handle them, and tell us what you are putting it on. Host rifle, thread pitch, whether you want it to live on one gun or move between several, and whether weight or sound matters more to you. If you are not sure, that conversation takes ten minutes and saves you buying twice. We are happy to have it on the phone as well.
2. You pay for it
The suppressor is paid for up front and then sits in our safe, registered to us, until ATF approves the transfer to you. That is normal and it is how every SOT does it.
3. We do the paperwork here
At our counter we complete the Form 4 and file it as an eForm 4. You bring your digital prints and photo from Grapevine, and we do the rest. We also submit the responsible-person paperwork if you are buying through a trust.
Bring a valid photo ID. If you are buying as a trust, bring the trust document. That is it.
4. You wait for ATF
Approval times move around, and anyone quoting you a guaranteed number is guessing. We keep a current read on what we are actually seeing come back in our NFA wait times guide, which we update as our own approvals land rather than repeating what was true last year.
You do not need to chase us during the wait. We watch the status and call you.
5. You collect it
Once the stamp comes back, you come in, complete a 4473 and the background check, and take it home. Keep a copy of your stamp with the suppressor.
Individual or trust?
- Individual is simpler and there is no trust to draft or maintain. Only you may possess the suppressor.
- A trust lets more than one person legally possess it, which matters if your spouse or a shooting partner will have access to it, or if you want it to pass cleanly to someone later. Every responsible person on the trust submits prints and photos.
Neither one is faster than the other at ATF any more. Pick on who needs access, not on speed. If you already have a trust, bring it; if you do not and you want one, we will point you at how to get one done properly.
The costs, plainly
- NFA transfer tax: $0 on suppressors under current law.
- The suppressor: whatever it is priced at.
- Our Form 4 fee: nothing if you bought the item from us. $200 if you bought it somewhere else and are transferring it in for us to file.
- Prints and photo: whatever the Grapevine shop charges. You pay them directly, once, and keep the prints for future purchases.
There is no charge to come in and ask questions.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to go somewhere else for fingerprints?
Yes. We do not take prints in store. We send you to a shop in Grapevine for digital fingerprints and a passport photo, you pay them directly, and you bring them back to us. The upside is that you keep them: they are good at any gun store, so it is a one-time errand rather than something you repeat on every NFA purchase.
Can I buy a suppressor if I live outside Texas?
A suppressor has to transfer through an SOT in your own state, so you would buy from us and we would ship it to an SOT near you, who then runs your Form 4. Call us and we will tell you honestly whether that is worth doing.
How long does approval take right now?
It varies, and it has moved a lot. See our NFA wait times guide for what we are currently seeing come back.
Can I shoot it before the stamp arrives?
No. It stays in our safe until the transfer is approved.
What if I am denied?
You are not out the cost of the suppressor. Come and talk to us and we will sort out where it goes from there.
Do you do SBRs and other NFA items too?
Yes. Short-barreled rifles, SBS and AOW transfers all run through the same counter and the same process.
