Product Description

The Hogue AR-15/M-16 Rubber Grip Beavertail with Finger Grooves OD Green is a replacement pistol grip designed to fit AR-15 and M-16 pattern rifles. This grip combines a beavertail backstrap with molded finger grooves to improve hand positioning and control during firing.

The rubber construction absorbs recoil impulse and provides a secure hold even when your hands are wet or gloved. The beavertail extension fills the web of your hand and helps prevent slide bite or hammer pinch during rapid strings of fire.

This grip installs using your existing grip screw and hardware. It suits shooters looking to upgrade from a standard A2-style grip or replace a worn factory part.

How the Beavertail Design Changes Your Grip

A beavertail backstrap extends higher up the back of the grip tang, filling the gap between the hammer and the web of your shooting hand. This reduces felt recoil by distributing rearward force across more surface area. It also lowers your bore axis relative to your wrist, which helps you manage muzzle rise during rapid fire.

The finger grooves guide your hand into a consistent placement every time you mount the rifle. That repeatability matters most when you transition between shooting positions or need to reacquire your grip quickly.

Installing an AR-15 Pistol Grip

Replacement grips for the AR-15 platform require a long grip screw and a lock washer that threads up through the bottom of the grip into the lower receiver. You will need to remove your safety selector detent and spring before unscrewing the old grip, then reinstall those parts when you mount the new one.

Most shooters complete the job in under ten minutes with a standard Allen key or screwdriver. If you prefer hands-on help, our gunsmithing shop in Roanoke handles grip installations and other lower parts upgrades.

Why Rubber Grips Appeal to Field Shooters

Rubber grips offer better traction than smooth polymer or aluminum, especially in rain or when you wear gloves. The material also dampens vibration and absorbs some of the shock transferred from the buffer tube into your firing hand.

The tradeoff is that rubber attracts dust and lint more readily than hard plastic, and it can degrade over time when exposed to certain gun cleaning solvents. Wipe rubber grips with a damp cloth rather than soaking them in solvent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does the Hogue AR-15 beavertail grip fit both mil-spec and commercial lower receivers?

A: Yes, AR-15 pistol grips attach to the lower receiver using a universal mounting point that is the same on mil-spec and commercial receivers. The grip screw threads into a captive nut inside the receiver, so fitment is consistent across all standard AR-15 platforms.

Q: How does the finger groove design affect shooters with small or large hands?

A: Finger grooves guide your hand into a predetermined position, which helps if your hand size matches the groove spacing but can feel restrictive if your fingers are much longer or shorter. Shooters with large hands often prefer grips with grooves because they prevent the hand from sliding down during recoil. Those with smaller hands sometimes find smooth grips more comfortable because they allow more freedom to adjust placement.

Q: Can I use this grip on an AR pistol or does it only fit rifles?

A: This grip fits any AR-15 or M-16 pattern lower receiver, including AR pistols, short-barreled rifles, and full-length rifles. The mounting interface is identical across all configurations. Be aware that certain grip features may affect the overall length measurement used to classify pistols versus rifles under federal law.

Q: What is the difference between OD green and other colors in terms of durability?

A: The color is a surface finish applied during molding and does not affect the durability or material properties of the rubber. OD green is olive drab green, a common color choice for shooters who want earth-tone accessories. All colors of the same Hogue grip model use the same rubber compound and manufacturing process.

Q: Will this grip work with an ambidextrous safety selector?

A: Most AR-15 pistol grips, including Hogue rubber grips, are designed to clear standard and ambidextrous safety levers. However, some aftermarket ambi safeties have wider levers that may contact the grip body depending on the selector design. If you run an oversized ambi safety, call 817-393-4000 and we can help you confirm fitment before you order.

Q: How do I transfer a firearm or parts purchase through Western Sport?

A: Pistol grips and other non-serialized parts ship directly to your door without an FFL transfer. Serialized firearms and lower receivers must ship to our shop in Roanoke, where you complete the required background check and paperwork before taking possession. We charge a transfer fee for items purchased elsewhere. Call 817-393-4000 for current transfer rates and to schedule a pickup.
