I’m Lance Rankin, owner and gunsmith at Western Sport in Roanoke, Texas. Rankin Industries is my own manufacturing brand; I hold a Type 07 FFL, which means I’m licensed to manufacture, not just sell. This barrel is one of the projects I’m proudest of from that side of the business: a 16-inch SOCOM profile, mid-length gas, 223 Wylde barrel made in collaboration with Faxon Firearms. I picked every spec on this thing for a reason, so let me walk you through it.
Why these specs
When I spec’d this barrel, I wasn’t chasing a spec sheet that looks good in a listing. I was building the barrel I’d want on my own general-purpose carbine. That meant three decisions up front.
First, the 223 Wylde chamber. It handles both 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington ammunition with ease, and the tighter freebore gives you better accuracy than a standard 5.56 chamber without the pressure concerns of shooting NATO ammo through a true .223 match chamber. Best of both, no compromises that matter.
Second, the mid-length gas system on a 16-inch barrel. Carbine-length gas on a 16-inch tube is overgassed and harsh; it’s a leftover from shorter military barrels. Mid-length smooths the recoil impulse, runs the action a little softer, and is easier on your parts over the long haul. On my bench, mid-length 16-inch guns are simply more pleasant to shoot and to keep running.
Third, the Gov’t/SOCOM profile. It keeps meat on the barrel where heat builds, without turning the rifle into a boat anchor. This barrel weighs 1.65 pounds. That’s a sane middle ground between a pencil barrel that walks when hot and an HBAR that wears you out on a carry sling.

The details most people skip
A couple of these line items deserve a closer look. The QPQ nitride treatment inside and out hardens the bore surface and resists corrosion better than a phosphate finish, and it doesn’t add a layer over the rifling the way chrome lining does, so accuracy stays consistent. The NP3-coated barrel extension makes feeding slicker and cleanup easier right where carbon and brass drag on every cycle. And magnetic particle inspection means each barrel gets checked for subsurface flaws, not just batch-sampled. Faxon’s manufacturing plus my requirements. That’s the partnership.
The 1:8 twist is the versatility pick. It stabilizes everything from 55-grain plinking ammo up through the 69 and 77-grain match loads, so the barrel doesn’t lock you into one kind of shooting.
