Product Description
The Magpul B.A.D. Lever is an ambidextrous bolt catch extension for AR-15 and AR-10 pattern rifles that allows you to release the bolt using your trigger finger from the firing grip. Instead of reaching over or shifting your hand to operate the standard bolt catch paddle, the B.A.D. Lever extends actuation to the right side of the receiver.
This part installs onto your existing GI-pattern bolt catch without replacing it. Once mounted, you maintain standard left-side operation while gaining right-side trigger-finger access to drop the bolt after a magazine change or malfunction clearance.
Shooters who prefer to keep their firing hand in position during reloads find the bad lever cuts transition time. It works equally well for left-handed shooters who want natural bolt release from their support side.

How the B.A.D. Lever Works
The lever clamps onto your rifle’s existing bolt catch and extends a paddle to the right side of the receiver. When you press that paddle with your trigger finger, it actuates the standard bolt catch mechanism to release the bolt carrier group forward.
Installation requires removing your pistol grip to access the bolt catch pin. The bad lever secures with an integral clamp that tightens around the left-side paddle. No permanent modification to your lower receiver is required, and you can remove it at any time.
The design preserves full use of the original bolt catch. You can still lock the bolt open manually and release it from the left side using the factory paddle exactly as before.
What Is a Bad Lever For
Competitive shooters use the b.a.d. lever to shave time during magazine changes. By releasing the bolt without adjusting your firing grip, you eliminate one hand movement from the reload sequence. That matters in timed events and keeps your support hand focused only on the magazine.
Tactical shooters appreciate the ability to charge their rifle one-handed if their support hand is occupied or injured. The bad lever also suits left-handed shooters who find the standard bolt catch awkward to operate from the right side of the gun.
Some shooters prefer not to use a b.a.d lever because it adds a protrusion inside the trigger guard. If you rest your finger high along the receiver or use a modified grip, confirm fitment. Others remove the lever for certain applications and reinstall it when needed.
Magpul Bad Lever Compatibility
The Magpul B.A.D. Lever works with mil-spec AR-15 and AR-10 bolt catches. It fits forged and billet lowers that use a standard bolt catch pin and paddle geometry. Most aftermarket bolt catches with GI dimensions will accept the lever, but oversized or proprietary designs may not.
Confirm clearance with your pistol grip and trigger guard before installation. Some skeletonized or flared grips place the shooter’s finger higher in the guard, where contact with the lever may occur. Magpul and other manufacturers publish compatibility notes for specific grip models.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is a bad lever?
A: A bad lever is an ambidextrous bolt catch extension that lets you release the bolt on an AR-15 or AR-10 using your trigger finger instead of reaching over to the left-side paddle. It clamps onto your existing bolt catch without replacing it, adding right-side actuation while preserving standard operation.
Q: Does the Magpul bad lever work with any AR-15 lower?
A: The Magpul B.A.D. Lever works with mil-spec AR-15 and AR-10 lowers that use a standard GI-pattern bolt catch. Most forged and billet receivers accept it, but you should verify clearance with your pistol grip and trigger guard. Send us a message if you need help confirming fitment for your specific lower.
Q: Do I have to replace my bolt catch to install a b.a.d. lever?
A: No, the B.A.D. Lever clamps onto your existing bolt catch rather than replacing it. You remove your pistol grip for access, secure the lever around the bolt catch paddle, and reinstall the grip. The factory bolt catch remains fully functional from the left side after installation.
Q: Can left-handed shooters use the Magpul bad lever?
A: Yes, left-handed shooters benefit from the bad lever because it places bolt release on the right side of the receiver, which is the support side for a lefty. This makes bolt actuation more natural than reaching across to the standard left-side paddle.
Q: Will a bad lever work with my pistol grip?
A: The Magpul B.A.D. Lever fits inside the trigger guard and may contact certain pistol grips that position your finger high on the receiver or use a flared or skeletonized design. Magpul grips are designed with B.A.D. Lever clearance, but verify fitment with aftermarket grips before ordering. Send us a message to discuss your specific grip model.
