Piston vs direct impingement — the real tradeoffs

Direct impingement (DI) is lighter, has less reciprocating mass, and is what mil-spec and most factory ARs use. The downside is that DI vents hot gas and carbon directly into the upper receiver around the bolt carrier. Over time this causes fouling buildup and requires more frequent cleaning.

Piston systems push the bolt carrier mechanically via a rod and piston rather than gas pressure. The receiver stays cleaner and cooler. The tradeoffs are added weight, a different balance point, and slightly different recoil characteristics. For suppressed guns, piston systems often solve over-gas issues that adjustable gas blocks also address.

Adams Arms P2 piston conversions are a drop-in replacement for DI systems in most standard AR-15 uppers. If you are running a suppressor and fighting excessive gas in the face and cycling issues, this is a legitimate solution.
