Product Description

Barrett MRAD — The Multi-Role Adaptive Design Precision Rifle

The Barrett MRAD is the rifle the United States Special Operations Command chose for its MK22 Precision Sniper Rifle program — a single chassis capable of fielding multiple calibers to cover every precision mission from 800-yard personnel interdiction to 2,000-yard anti-materiel work. The same rifle, in civilian configuration, is available here. No other production bolt-action platform at this price delivers the combination of military pedigree, verified sub-MOA accuracy, and the practical flexibility of a true user-changeable barrel system.

The MRAD’s monolithic upper receiver is machined from 7000-series aluminum alloy — the same aerospace-grade material used in the MK22 military platform — with a full-length M1913 Picatinny top rail built into the receiver itself. The handguard provides mounting points at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock for accessories, electro-optics, and rails. The entire chassis is built around the barrel change: loosen two Torx bolts, swap the barrel assembly, change the bolt face if needed, re-tighten. No gunsmith. No headspace gauge. No press fit. You are done in under five minutes.

The Caliber Selection Guide

The MRAD platform covers seven calibers. Here is how to think about each one:

.308 Winchester / 7.62×51 NATO — The training caliber. At $1.50–$3.00 per round for quality ammo, the .308 barrel is how you build thousands of repetitions on the MRAD trigger, chassis, and manual of arms without burning through your barrel time or ammunition budget in the magnums. Capable to 800 yards with the right load. Also available in 17″ barrel length for suppressor-optimized configurations (see the MRAD SMR).

6.5 Creedmoor — The competition and general precision rifle caliber. Excellent ballistic coefficient, mild recoil for a precision magnum, deep commercial support from every major match ammo manufacturer. The 24″ MRAD barrel extracts the full velocity envelope. Capable to 1,200+ yards in capable hands. If you shoot PRS, NRL, or similar competitions, this is the default choice.

.300 Winchester Magnum — The versatile long-range hunting and precision caliber. Decades of field-proven performance in big game hunting and precision rifle work. Supersonic well past 1,400 yards with 200-grain loads. Wide commercial ammunition support. If you hunt elk at distance or work in a mixed hunting/precision shooting role, this is the caliber.

.300 PRC (Precision Rifle Cartridge) — The modern long-range standard. Designed from the ground up for long-range precision shooting with high-BC, heavy-for-caliber bullets in the 220–230 grain range. Higher efficiency than .300 Win Mag, better harmonics at long range, and growing commercial support from Hornady, Federal, and Barnes. If you’re building for 1,000–1,500 yard work with a modern cartridge, the .300 PRC is the answer.

.338 Lapua Magnum — The extreme range caliber. The choice of military snipers worldwide for long-range interdiction, and for competitive shooters reaching past 1,400 yards where the .300-caliber magnums lose steam. 250–300 grain projectiles at 2,900+ fps from the 26″ barrel, staying supersonic past 1,600 yards. The definitive long-range cartridge for the MRAD platform.

Key Features

User-changeable barrel system — Two Torx bolts, one Torx wrench. The barrel extension pre-headspaces on assembly. No gunsmith, no headspace gauge, no press. Compatible calibers: .338 Lapua, .338 Norma, .300 Norma, .300 PRC, 7mm PRC, .300 Win Mag, .308 Win, 6.5 Creedmoor.

Folding stock — Folds right with a single button press, protecting the bolt handle and keeping the profile slim for transport. Locks rigidly when extended. Adjustable length of pull via single-button adjustment. No tools required.

Tool-free trigger module — The entire trigger group removes from the lower receiver without tools. Adjustable pull weight. Field-serviceable.

Adjustable cheek piece — Reversible, no-tools adjustment. The part presents two different profiles to accommodate different face geometries for consistent eye alignment to the optic.

Ambidextrous controls — Paddle magazine release, left/right swappable thumb safety, compatible with standard AR15/M16 pistol grips. Fully ambidextrous platform.

Polymer bolt guide — The MRAD bolt rides in an enclosed polymer guide. Provides smooth, reliable operation in harsh environments where traditional designs can bind.

The Value of One Chassis

A second MRAD barrel assembly costs approximately $1,200–$1,800 depending on caliber. A second complete precision rifle in a different caliber costs $2,000–$7,000+. If you have a reason to own precision rifles in more than one caliber — and most serious precision shooters do — the MRAD’s barrel system is not just a convenience, it is a significant financial advantage over the long run. One action, one trigger, one optic mount, one manual of arms. Many calibers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the MRAD require a gunsmith for barrel changes?

No. Two Torx bolts and a single Torx wrench. The barrel extension self-headspaces on assembly — no gauge, no press, no gunsmithing. A barrel change takes under five minutes at the bench. Additional barrel assemblies are available through Barrett and authorized dealers.

What is the accuracy guarantee on the MRAD?

Barrett guarantees sub-MOA performance (.75 MOA) with quality match ammunition. This is verified at the factory before shipment. Real-world results from precision shooters consistently confirm this — MRAD platforms regularly shoot 0.5–0.75 MOA groups with premium loads.

Is the MRAD the same rifle as the US Army’s MK22 PSR?

The civilian MRAD is built on the same platform and to the same specifications as the MK22 PSR. The MK22 program selected the MRAD after competitive testing against other precision rifle systems. The primary difference in the civilian version is the semi-automatic-only equivalent — the MRAD is already bolt-action so this distinction doesn’t apply here.

What is the difference between MRAD, MRAD SMR, and MRAD ELR?

The standard MRAD is the modular multi-caliber platform with user-changeable barrels and a folding stock. The MRAD SMR (Single Mission Rifle) is a lighter, fixed-caliber version optimized for suppressor use — it does not have a user-changeable barrel. The MRAD ELR is the extreme long-range variant with a 36″ barrel in .416 Barrett, optimized for distances past 1,500 yards.

Which caliber should I buy?

See the caliber guide above. Short version: .308 for training economy, 6.5 CM for competition, .300 Win Mag for hunting versatility, .300 PRC for modern long-range precision, .338 Lapua for extreme range past 1,400 yards. The MRAD barrel system means you can start with one caliber and add others later.

Does the MRAD accept AICS-pattern magazines?

The MRAD uses proprietary Barrett MRAD magazines, not AICS-pattern mags. All calibers share the same lower receiver with caliber-appropriate magazines.

What optic should I mount on the MRAD?

The 21.75″ top rail with 10 MIL cant is designed for variable-power precision scopes in the 5-25× to 7-35× range. Popular choices: Leupold MK5HD, Nightforce ATACR, Vortex Razor HD Gen III, Schmidt & Bender PMII. We can assist with optic selection and mounting at our Roanoke, TX shop.
