Barrett MRAD SMR — Single Mission Rifle, Built for Suppressor Use
The MRAD SMR (Single Mission Rifle) is the answer to a specific question: if you know your caliber and you plan to run a suppressor, what is the best possible configuration of the MRAD platform? The answer is a rifle that sheds 2.5 lbs from the standard MRAD chassis, shortens overall length by 1 inch, deploys a free-float barrel held with a standard barrel nut for maximum harmonic isolation, uses a fixed stock that eliminates any chassis flex at the butt, and ships with a suppressor-capable threaded muzzle device already installed. That is the MRAD SMR.
The name is honest: Single Mission. Unlike the standard MRAD whose barrel is user-changeable across seven calibers, the SMR is factory-set in one caliber and not designed for barrel swaps. This is the deliberate design decision — optimizing every element of the chassis for one role rather than maintaining the compromises required for a universal barrel-change interface. The result is a lighter, more rigid platform that, combined with a quality suppressor, represents one of the most capable suppressor-optimized precision rifle systems available to civilians.
Why the MRAD SMR Now
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) eliminated the federal $200 NFA tax stamp fee. Suppressors — previously a $200 + wait-time proposition — are now a $0 tax stamp item. The paperwork and ATF Form 4 wait time remain, but the financial penalty is gone. If you have been considering a suppressor-optimized precision rifle and waiting for the right time, the right time is now. The MRAD SMR is built from the ground up for this use case. We process Form 4 NFA transfers in-house at Western Sport.

The .308 / 17-Inch Barrel Configuration
The 17-inch .308 Winchester SMR is the most tactically compact configuration Barrett builds in this family. At 39.5 inches overall length unsuppressed and 10.6 lbs, it is one of the lightest precision rifles on the market before adding a suppressor. With a quality .308 suppressor adding approximately 6–8 inches and 1–1.5 lbs, the total package is still shorter than many full-length bolt guns and significantly quieter. The 17″ barrel produces approximately 2,550–2,600 fps with 175-grain match loads — somewhat less than the 24″ standard MRAD .308 but adequate for precision work to 800 yards, and the suppressor’s improved gas management partially compensates. This is the configuration for anyone who prioritizes hearing safety and practical length without sacrificing the Barrett platform.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the main difference between the MRAD SMR and the standard MRAD?
The SMR is a fixed-caliber, suppressor-optimized variant. It does not have user-changeable barrels — you select your caliber when you purchase, and the rifle is built around that caliber. In exchange, you get a lighter chassis (up to 2.5 lbs less), a free-float barrel for maximum harmonic isolation, a suppressor-capable muzzle device, and an M-LOK upper receiver. The SMR costs approximately $1,300 less than the standard MRAD.
Do I need to use a suppressor with the MRAD SMR?
No. The SMR functions as a standard precision rifle without a suppressor — the suppressor-capable muzzle device includes a thread protector. Many owners run the SMR unsuppressed and add a suppressor later after ATF Form 4 approval. The OBBBA eliminated the $200 NFA tax stamp fee, so the only cost is the suppressor itself and the Form 4 wait time.
Which suppressor is compatible with the MRAD SMR?
The MRAD SMR has a caliber-appropriate threaded muzzle device compatible with most quality precision rifle suppressors for the respective caliber. Barrett’s own AML338 and AM338 suppressors are popular choices for .338 Lapua variants. For .308 and 6.5 CM, suppressors from SilencerCo, Dead Air, Thunderbeast, and OSS are all frequently paired with this platform. We handle NFA transfers in-house and can assist with suppressor selection for your specific caliber — call us at (817) 393-4000.
What is the accuracy guarantee on the MRAD SMR?
Barrett guarantees .75 MOA accuracy with quality match ammunition — the same guarantee as the standard MRAD. The free-float barrel and fixed stock of the SMR may offer improved consistency vs. the standard MRAD in some shooting positions due to the elimination of chassis flex at the fold point.
Is the MRAD SMR compatible with standard MRAD accessories?
The SMR shares approximately 90% parts commonality with the standard MRAD, including the trigger group, bolt components, and most chassis accessories. The barrel and upper receiver are specific to the SMR configuration. Barrett MRAD magazine accessories are fully compatible.
What optic should I mount?
The 21.75″ top rail with 10 MIL cant accepts standard 34mm or 30mm precision rifle rings. Variable-power scopes in the 5-25× to 7-35× range are ideal. Nightforce ATACR, Leupold MK5HD, and Vortex Razor HD Gen III are all frequently paired with this platform. We can assist with selection, mounting, and leveling at our Roanoke shop.
