Is 6.5 Creedmoor the right caliber for elk?

Yes. The 6.5 Creedmoor delivers excellent ballistics for elk at standard hunting ranges (under 600 yards) with factory ammunition readily available and cheaper than premium magnums. It generates less recoil and wind drift than larger calibers, which matters on a mountain rifle you’re carrying all day. If you’re regularly shooting past 700 yards in open country, consider the 6.5 PRC variant (which uses a 3-round magazine in the AICS system). For most mountain hunts, the 6.5 Creedmoor is more than enough gun and easier to shoot accurately.

How much does the rifle actually weigh, and how much of that is the chassis?

The complete rifle weighs 6.6 to 6.8 lbs ready to shoot. The XLR Element 4.0 chassis system—magnesium chassis, folding carbon fiber buttstock, carbon fiber grip, and built-in level—weighs just 28 oz (1.75 lbs). The 22-inch CURE Carbon barrel is also exceptionally light. Every component was chosen to save weight without cutting accuracy or durability.

Will my current scope base and rings work on the Premier action?

The Premier action uses R700 pattern scope bases with standard 8×40 screws, so your existing Remington 700–compatible bases will work fine. However, the machined RRS 1.5-inch Arca-Swiss dovetail in the forend is a significant upgrade if you’re using a modern tripod or ball head. Many shooters pair this rifle with a lightweight Arca-compatible mount for direct rifle-to-tripod connection—no separate scope base required.
