Product Description
The Daniel Defense AR-15 Lite Rail Barrel Nut Wrench is the proprietary Bolt-Up System spanner wrench required to install the Daniel Defense Bolt-Up System barrel nut, and it is designed to be used with a 1/2 Drive Torque Wrench. It covers eight Daniel Defense rails: MFR XL, MFR Rail, SLiM Rail, DDM4 Rail, AR15 Lite Rail, AR15 Lite Rail II, AR15 Lite Rail III and the Rail Interface System II.
Free-float rails do not use the mil-spec barrel nut a generic armorer’s wrench is cut for. Daniel Defense rails use the patented Bolt-Up System, which secures the handguard to the upper receiver with a steel barrel nut and a bolt-up plate, giving a flat-top upper a free-floating, continuous, uninterrupted upper rail platform. That nut has its own profile and needs a spanner cut to match it.

Where this wrench fits in a rail installation
The wrench drives the nut; it does not hold the rifle. A proper job also wants the upper held in a reaction rod or vise block, clean threads, and a torque wrench on that 1/2 drive. Because one wrench covers the MFR, MFR XL, SLiM, DDM4, all three Lite Rail generations and the RIS II, it is the only spanner you need across Daniel Defense rail families. Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Which Daniel Defense rails does this wrench work on?
A: Eight of them: the MFR XL, MFR Rail, SLiM Rail, DDM4 Rail, AR15 Lite Rail, AR15 Lite Rail II, AR15 Lite Rail III and the Rail Interface System II (RIS II). All eight use the Bolt-Up System barrel nut, which is what this spanner is cut to drive, so one wrench covers the whole family.
Q: Can I use a standard AR armorer’s wrench instead?
A: No. This is a proprietary spanner wrench required to install the Bolt-Up System barrel nut. A generic A2 armorer’s wrench is cut for a mil-spec barrel nut and castle nuts and will not index on the Bolt-Up nut. A tool that does not seat fully slips and rounds the engagement surfaces, and a handguard swap then becomes a barrel nut extraction problem.
Q: Does it take a torque wrench?
A: Yes – it is designed to be used with a 1/2 Drive Torque Wrench. That is the point of the spanner rather than a breaker bar: barrel nut torque is what keeps a free-float handguard from shifting under a bipod or a loaded sling, so the joint wants to be set to a figure, not to feel.
Q: What is the Bolt-Up System and why does it need its own nut?
A: It is Daniel Defense’s patented handguard attachment method, using a steel barrel nut and a bolt-up plate to secure the handguard to the upper receiver. It gives a flat-top upper a free-floating, continuous, uninterrupted upper rail platform and simplifies alignment to the host receiver.
Q: How much does the wrench weigh?
A: The product weight for this part number is given as 1.8, with no unit specified, so we are not going to turn that into ounces for you. Call 817-393-4000 and we will confirm it properly. It is a hand spanner, so it is not a heavy item either way.
Q: What is it made of?
A: Material and finish are not stated for this part number, and on a tool that has to take real torque we would rather confirm than guess. Call 817-393-4000 and we will get an answer from Daniel Defense. What we can stand behind is the rail list, the 1/2 drive and the Bolt-Up fitment.
