Product Description

Update, October 9, 2026: ATF no longer requires a Form 4, tax stamp, fingerprints or registration for suppressors, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns or AOWs. They now transfer on a standard Form 4473 with a background check. Anything below that mentions a Form 4, a wait or a tax stamp was written before this change. What changed

The Magpul MOE SL Carbine Stock [BLK] is a drop-in stock designed for mil-spec carbine receiver extensions on AR-15 and M4 pattern rifles. It replaces factory carbine stocks with a slimmer, more streamlined profile. This stock is built for shooters who want improved ergonomics without adding bulk to their rifle.

The MOE SL series reduces overall width compared to standard MOE stocks. That narrower profile improves cheek weld and makes the rifle easier to handle in confined spaces or when wearing body armor.

What Fits the MOE SL Carbine Stock

This stock is designed for mil-spec carbine receiver extensions, the four-position or six-position buffer tubes found on most AR-15 rifles. Mil-spec tubes measure approximately 1.14 inches in outer diameter. The MOE SL will not fit commercial-spec receiver extensions, which are slightly wider at around 1.17 inches.

If you are replacing a factory stock on a common AR-15 carbine, odds are good you have a mil-spec tube. Send us a message if you need help confirming your buffer tube diameter before ordering.

How the MOE SL Compares to Standard MOE Stocks

The MOE SL is a slimmed-down version of Magpul’s original MOE carbine stock. The “SL” designation stands for “slim line.” It removes material from the sides and bottom to reduce width and weight while keeping the same length of pull positions and attachment method.

Shooters moving from a standard MOE to an MOE SL gain a stock that tucks tighter to the face and shoulders more naturally in kit. If you run a sling, chest rig, or plate carrier, the narrower cheek area reduces interference. For more stocks and buttstocks, browse our full selection.

Installing a Carbine Stock

Installing the MOE SL Carbine Stock requires removing your current stock from the receiver extension. Most carbine stocks use a friction lock or lever release at the bottom rear of the stock body. Depress or pull the lock, slide the old stock off, then slide the MOE SL onto the buffer tube until it clicks into one of the indexed positions.

No gunsmithing tools are needed for this swap, though a padded vise or armorer’s wrench can help if your current stock is stuck. If you want the installation done professionally, Western Sport offers gunsmithing services on site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does the Magpul MOE SL Carbine Stock fit commercial buffer tubes?

A: No, the MOE SL Carbine Stock is designed for mil-spec carbine receiver extensions only. Commercial tubes are wider and will not lock securely. Measure your buffer tube diameter or send us a message for help identifying your tube type.

Q: What is the difference between the MOE and MOE SL stock?

A: The MOE SL is narrower and lighter than the standard MOE stock. It removes material from the sides and bottom for a slimmer cheek weld. Both fit mil-spec carbine tubes and offer the same length-of-pull adjustment positions.

Q: Can I add a sling attachment to the MOE SL stock?

A: The MOE SL includes ambidextrous sling mounting points on each side.

Q: Will this stock work on an AR-15 pistol with a brace?

A: The MOE SL Carbine Stock is a rifle stock designed for carbine receiver extensions. Installing a stock on a pistol lower creates a short-barreled rifle, which requires an approved ATF Form 1 before assembly. Send us a message to discuss NFA requirements.

Q: How do I know if my AR buffer tube is mil-spec or commercial?

A: Mil-spec carbine tubes measure about 1.14 inches outer diameter, while commercial tubes are about 1.17 inches. Most factory AR-15 carbines use mil-spec tubes.
