The P365 is the pistol that reset the concealed-carry market, and SIG has since built it into a family of more than a dozen variants. They share a name, a magazine concept and a general shape — and almost nothing else about how they carry and shoot. This page is the comparison most people are actually trying to run.
We are a licensed FFL in Roanoke, Texas, and we stock the P365 line. If you would rather just talk it through, call 817-393-4000.
The short answer
- Smallest, easiest to hide: the standard P365 (10+1)
- Best all-round balance: the P365X — grip of the XL, slide of the base gun
- Best to actually shoot: the P365XL, longer slide and sight radius
- Most rounds without going bigger: the P365-XMACRO at 17+1
- Least recoil: an XMACRO COMP or XL COMP, with the compensator built in
- Lightest recoil overall: the .380 ACP versions, for shooters who struggle with 9mm
The whole family, compared
| Model | Capacity | Barrel | What it is for |
|---|---|---|---|
| P365 (Nitron / Micro-Compact) | 10+1 | 3.1in | The original. Smallest of the line and the easiest to conceal. The default answer if concealment is the priority |
| P365X | 12+1 | 3.1in | The base gun’s short slide on the XL’s longer grip. More to hold, same to hide under a shirt. Many people’s sweet spot |
| P365XL | 12+1 | 3.7in | Longer slide and sight radius. Noticeably easier to shoot well at distance, slightly harder to conceal |
| P365-XMACRO | 17+1 | 3.7in | Full-size capacity in a frame still thin enough to carry. The one to pick if round count matters most |
| XMACRO COMP / XL COMP | 17+1 / 12+1 | 3.7in / 3.1in | Integral compensator. Meaningfully flatter shooting, at the cost of a little muzzle blast |
| P365 .380 ACP | 10+1 | 3.1in | Same platform in a softer-recoiling cartridge. A genuine option for arthritic hands or recoil-sensitive shooters |
| P365 AXG Legion | 17+1 | 3.7in | Alloy frame, G10 grips, magwell. Heaviest and most expensive — the range-and-carry flagship |
How to actually choose
Start with the grip, not the slide
Almost everyone shops these by barrel length, and it is the wrong end of the gun. What determines whether a P365 prints under your shirt is the grip, because that is the part that sticks out from your body. What determines how well you shoot it is the grip too, because that is what your hand is holding.
The X and the XL share a grip. The base P365 has a shorter one. If you can get all three fingers on an X or XL and only two on the base gun, the X or XL is going to shoot much better for you, and it will conceal very nearly as well.
Optic-ready or not
Most current P365 variants ship with a cut for a micro red dot. If you are even considering a dot later, buy the optic-ready version now — milling a slide afterwards costs more than the difference did.
Manual safety or not
SIG offers most models both ways. It is a personal call, not a better-or-worse one. If you have trained on a manual safety for years, get one. If you have not, the safety is one more thing to forget under stress.
Do not overlook the .380
The .380 ACP versions get dismissed by people who do not need them. For a shooter who cannot comfortably rack a 9mm slide or manage its recoil, a .380 they will carry and can shoot accurately beats a 9mm they will leave at home. That is the entire calculation.
Magazines carry across, mostly
Within the 9mm line, magazines are largely interchangeable by capacity rather than by model — a 12-round X magazine works in the base gun, standing proud of the grip. Higher-capacity magazines from the XMACRO use a different frame geometry. The .380 versions use their own magazines and do not cross over. Ask us before you buy spares if you are running more than one model.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the P365 and the P365X?
The X uses the longer XL grip module with the base gun’s 3.1in slide, giving 12+1 instead of 10+1 and a full three-finger grip for most hands. Same concealed footprint above the belt, more gun to hold.
Is the P365XL too big to conceal?
For most people, no. The XL’s extra length is in the slide, which sits inside the waistband and against the body. Concealment problems come from grip length, and the XL shares its grip with the X.
Which P365 has the most capacity?
The XMACRO and AXG Legion at 17+1, which is full-size capacity in a frame under an inch thick.
Do P365 magazines work across models?
Within 9mm, largely yes by capacity — though a longer magazine in a shorter grip will extend below the frame. XMACRO and .380 magazines are their own thing. Ask before buying spares.
