First, let’s clear up the name, because it confuses people every week. When folks talk about Daniel Defense pistols, they don’t mean handguns. They mean AR pistols: short-barreled AR-platform guns like the MK18 pistol and the .300 Blackout 300s, built with a brace instead of a stock. I’m Lance Rankin, owner and gunsmith at Western Sport in Roanoke, Texas, an authorized Daniel Defense dealer, and these little guns are some of my favorite things DD ever made.
Why the DD pistols earned their reputation
Everything that makes a Daniel Defense rifle good carries straight over to the pistol format. The receivers are machined to tight tolerances from aircraft-grade aluminum, so the upper and lower fit together the way a rifle at this price should. The cold hammer forged barrels are the heart of it; even on a short barrel, DD’s barrel work gives you accuracy that embarrasses most guns this size. Furniture and ergonomics are DD’s own, comfortable through long range sessions, and the controls and rail setups take lights and optics without drama.
The MK18 pistol is the famous one, the civilian version of the 10.3-inch gun made legendary by special operations use. The 300s takes the same short package and chambers it in .300 Blackout, which is honestly what short barrels want to shoot; .300 BLK was designed to perform from stubby barrels, and it runs beautifully suppressed.
Who an AR pistol is for, and who it isn’t
An AR pistol gives you a compact, hard-hitting package that’s legally a pistol, no NFA paperwork, which makes it attractive for home defense, truck guns, and anyone who wants MK18 handling without the tax stamp wait. The honest trade-offs: short barrels give up velocity in 5.56, muzzle blast is significant without a suppressor, and the brace rules have been a legal moving target for years, so check current ATF guidance before you configure anything. The part most people don’t know: DD stopped making them
Here’s the wrinkle, and where my shop comes into the story. Daniel Defense stopped manufacturing these pistols. You can’t just order a new MK18 pistol or 300s from the factory anymore.
So we build them. Western Sport is a Type 07 FFL, a licensed manufacturer, and under my Rankin Industries brand I make a billet 7075 aluminum stripped lower with an integral milled-in trigger guard. We assemble the pistols using that lower with genuine Daniel Defense parts for everything else: DD upper, DD cold hammer forged barrel, DD furniture, the works. I’ll say something biased but true: I think the result is a better pistol than the original. The billet lower with the integral trigger guard is an upgrade over DD’s forged stripped lower, both in rigidity and in fit, and since I machine and inspect these myself, I’ll stand behind every one. You get the DD barrel and parts that made these guns great, on a foundation I’m prouder of.
Get one while you can
Because DD no longer makes the pistols, genuine-parts builds are a finite thing; when DD parts inventory dries up in a configuration, that configuration is done.
