In a move that feels like a total nightmare, the Department of Justice accidentally published a member’s private tax information in court.
The background of the mess
To understand why this is such a big deal, you have to look at why this person was filing paperwork in the first place. This started as part of a larger lawsuit against the DOJ and ATF regarding the registration requirements for items regulated by the National Firearms Act.
When this GOA member filled out their registration form, they hit a strange part of the process. In box 4i, the form asks why you want to make an NFA item. The member wrote, “To exercise my God-given rights.”
In fact, the ATF denied the application. This was important because the government claims the NFA is a “shall-issue” system—meaning they say it is just a minor hoop to jump through. By denying this form simply because the applicant stated, essentially, that they liked their rights, the member proved the government’s argument in court was totally wrong.
How the government doxxed a gun owner in public
While this legal back-and-forth was happening, the government made a massive, life-altering mistake. They filed the member’s form in a public court docket but failed to redact the sensitive information. They left the person’s full name, city, and state exposed for anyone to find.
To make matters worse, they also confirmed exactly how many regulated items the person owned. Essentially, they handed the public a map of a private citizen’s firearms collection. More importantly, this is not just a clerical error; it is a violation of federal law, as these forms are legally protected tax documents.

Instead, they got a bureaucratic runaround. The Office of Professional Responsibility explained that they have the power to look into government lawyers but they usually don’t. Their policy is to wait until a court makes a specific finding of misconduct before they decide to step in.
Think about that for a second. The system is designed to wait for a judge to do all the heavy lifting before an internal office will even consider touching the case. It is frustrating to see how little these agencies seem to care about the privacy of the people they are supposed to serve. If they are this reckless with personal tax data, it really makes you wonder what else is going on behind closed doors.
