I’ve built more AR-15s than I can count. I’m Lance Rankin, owner and gunsmith at Western Sport in Roanoke, Texas, and custom AR builds are a core part of what my shop does. Building your first one is absolutely doable at a kitchen table with the right tools and a little patience, and this guide covers every part you need and the decisions that actually matter. Fair warning: I’ll also tell you where first-timers get in trouble, because I’m usually the one who fixes it afterward.
Before you buy anything: compatibility
The AR is modular, but “mostly standardized” isn’t “universal.” Stick to mil-spec dimensions and parts from reputable makers and everything fits. The classic traps:
- Mil-spec vs. commercial buffer tubes have different diameters (about 1.14″ vs 1.17″). Your stock must match your tube. Buy mil-spec and forget the problem exists.
- The gas block bore must match the barrel’s gas block journal. A .750″ journal takes a .750″ block, full stop.
- Free-float handguards use proprietary barrel nuts. Buy the handguard and nut as a system.
Tools you actually need
A vise with receiver blocks, a torque wrench, an armorer’s wrench, and roll pin punches. That’s the honest minimum. Skip the punches and try a hardware-store nail, and your new lower gets the scratched-up bolt catch area I see weekly. Total tool cost is around $150, and you’ll use them for the life of the hobby.
The lower receiver
The lower is the serialized part, legally the firearm, so it ships to an FFL like mine and transfers with a background check. My buying a gun in Texas guide covers that process. A standard forged 7075 aluminum lower is the right call for a first build; billet looks pretty but buys you nothing functional.
You’ll choose stripped or complete. A stripped lower plus a lower parts kit (trigger, hammer, safety, bolt catch, mag catch, pins, springs) is the full building experience. A complete lower skips the fiddliest pins. No shame in either. Some modern lowers use threaded pins and integral trigger guards, which honestly make a first build much more pleasant.
The barrel: the one part not to cheap out on
Your barrel decides what the rifle can do. For a first build I push people toward a 16-inch barrel with a mid-length gas system almost every time. It’s legal everywhere without NFA paperwork, it balances velocity and handiness, and mid-length gas cycles noticeably softer than carbine.
- Twist rate: 1:7 or 1:8 stabilizes everything from 55-grain plinking ammo to 77-grain match loads.
- Chamber: 5.56 NATO (or .223 Wylde) shoots both 5.56 and .223 safely. A .223-only chamber shouldn’t run 5.56 pressures.
- Profile and material: a government or lightweight profile in CMV steel is plenty. Save the heavy stainless barrel for a later precision build.
Bolt carrier group and charging handle
The BCG is the engine, and it’s the second place not to bargain-hunt. Get a full-auto (M16) profile carrier with a properly staked gas key and a shot-peened, magnetic-particle-inspected bolt. Phosphate and nitride finishes are both proven; nitride cleans easier. Nickel boron is slick but only from makers who do it well. Any decent charging handle works; an ambi model is a nice upgrade if you shoot lefty or run an optic with a big footprint.
Gas system and muzzle device
Match the gas tube length to the barrel’s port location: pistol, carbine, mid, or rifle. The barrel maker tells you which. Read your ejection pattern once it’s running. Brass flying forward of 1 o’clock and a bruised shoulder mean over-gassed; sluggish ejection or failures to lock back mean under-gassed. A heavier buffer (H or H2) is the cheap fix for over-gassing, and an adjustable gas block is the thorough one, especially if a suppressor is in your future. A plain A2 flash hider is $10 and works.
Handguard, buffer, stock, trigger
Go free-float, M-LOK, about an inch shorter than your barrel. Torque the barrel nut to the manufacturer’s spec with a real torque wrench. Out back, a mil-spec tube with a carbine or H buffer and a Magpul MOE or CTR stock is the proven setup. The mil-spec trigger in your parts kit is gritty but reliable; shoot it a while before deciding whether a Geissele or similar upgrade is worth $150 to you. It usually is, eventually.
Sights and finishing touches
Budget for an optic from the start, because the rifle ships from your imagination without one. Build it, check it, shoot it
Take your time, torque to spec, and function-check before live fire: safety on, pull, no drop; safety off, fire, hold, cycle, reset. If any of it intimidates you, that’s fine.
