A quick history of forced reset technology
Forced reset designs grew out of a simple goal: let a semi-automatic rifle cycle as fast as the shooter can pull the trigger, while still firing only one round per pull. Early forced reset triggers (FRTs) replaced the entire trigger group and used the hammer’s energy to force a reset. Those devices became the center of a long legal fight, and in May 2025 the U.S. Department of Justice settled its litigation with Rare Breed Triggers, agreeing not to enforce the federal machine-gun statute against qualifying FRT-15 and WOT triggers that fire one round per function of the trigger.
The forced reset selector — often called a “Super Safety” — is the newer evolution of that idea. Rather than swapping the whole fire control group, it achieves a fast forced reset through the safety selector alone, keeping your existing trigger in place. It’s a cleaner, lower-wear approach that has made this category one of the most talked-about upgrades in the AR-15 world.
