The MRAD ELR (Multi-Role Adaptive Design, Extreme Long Range) is Barrett’s purpose-built answer to competitive extreme long-range shooting. Everything about this rifle — the 36-inch barrel, the .416 Barrett cartridge, the 23-lb chassis — exists to maximize velocity, ballistic coefficient, and stability at distances that approach and exceed 2,000 yards. This is not a general-purpose precision rifle with a long barrel added. It is a dedicated ELR platform developed specifically for the MRAD chassis around a cartridge Barrett engineered for this exact purpose.

The .416 Barrett Cartridge

Barrett developed the .416 Barrett cartridge to push beyond the practical limits of .50 BMG at extreme distances. Based on a necked-down .50 BMG case, it drives a 400-grain bullet at approximately 3,250 feet per second from the 36-inch barrel. The key advantage over .50 BMG at distance is the higher ballistic coefficient of the .416 bullet design — a narrower, longer projectile that retains velocity and resists wind deflection more efficiently at ranges beyond 1,500 yards. The .416 Barrett is also unrestricted in .50 BMG-restricted states (California, Maryland, Illinois).

Why 36 Inches of Barrel

For the .416 Barrett, the 36-inch barrel is a velocity decision. The cartridge achieves peak velocity efficiency at longer barrel lengths, extracting the full powder burn from the case and delivering significantly higher muzzle velocity than a 24-inch or 26-inch barrel. At distances of 1,500–2,500 yards, that additional velocity translates directly into less time-of-flight, less wind call, and a flatter trajectory — all of which reduce the shooter’s margin for error at extreme range.

The MRAD Platform

The MRAD ELR is built on Barrett’s MRAD chassis — the same platform the US Army selected as the MK22 PSR (Precision Sniper Rifle). MRAD barrels are user-changeable by loosening two Torx bolts, allowing caliber conversion at the bench. The folding, adjustable stock accommodates different shooter dimensions and positions.
