Product Description
The Daniel Defense Barrel Replacement Kit, 5.56 NATO, 14.5″, Government profile, mid-length is a 1:7 twist replacement barrel package for AR-15 pattern firearms built around the M4-service length, in the mid-length gas configuration.
Fourteen and a half inches is the most common barrel length in service use and one of the most common in private hands, usually finished with a pinned and welded flash hider. When that barrel wears out, replacing it like for like keeps the rifle exactly as it was, including its legal status, provided the new muzzle device is permanently attached in the same way. That is the most frequent reason this kit gets bought.
The mid-length gas system is the part worth noticing. Mid-length gas at 14.5 inches moves the port about two inches further from the chamber than a carbine system, lowering peak port pressure and extending dwell time. The impulse is flatter, the bolt carrier group takes less of a beating, and the handguard can be longer. If your existing rifle is carbine gas, switching to mid-length as part of the re-barrel means new gas tube and handguard parts too.

The 14.5-inch legal question, answered plainly
A barrel is a component and not a firearm, so this kit requires no FFL transfer, no Form 4473 and no background check. The National Firearms Act applies to the assembled firearm. A 14.5″ barrel on a rifle-configured receiver is a short-barrelled rifle unless a muzzle device is permanently attached to bring overall barrel length to 16 inches or more. The alternatives are a receiver already registered as an SBR, or a firearm configured as a pistol. Western Sport holds an SOT and our gunsmith pins muzzle devices on site, so a re-barrel and a pin-and-weld can be done in one visit. Call 817-393-4000 to check what your rifle needs.
What we will confirm before you order
One honest note before you order. There is no published specification sheet for this Barrel Replacement Kit, so we state only what the kit’s own designation establishes: 5.56 NATO, 14.5″, 1:7 twist, Government profile, mid-length gas system. We are not going to quote a weight, a muzzle thread pitch or a packing list by borrowing figures from a different barrel. Call 817-393-4000 and we will confirm the exact contents and specifications from stock before you buy.
Choose a pinnable device from our muzzle devices, compare individual barrels in our Daniel Defense barrels, or look at Daniel Defense uppers if a whole new upper makes more sense.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does a 14.5″ replacement barrel need a pinned muzzle device?
A: For a rifle build that stays outside the NFA, yes. A muzzle device permanently attached so overall barrel length reaches 16 inches or more keeps the firearm an ordinary rifle. Without it, a 14.5″ barrel on a rifle-configured receiver is a short-barrelled rifle requiring registration.
Q: What comes in this Barrel Replacement Kit?
A: There is no published packing list for this kit, so we will not assert its contents. Call 817-393-4000 and we will confirm from stock. What the designation establishes is 5.56 NATO, 14.5 inches, 1:7 twist, Government profile and a mid-length gas system, and those are the specifications we will stand behind.
Q: Can I keep my old muzzle device when I re-barrel?
A: Only if it can be removed without damage, which a pinned and welded device generally cannot. In practice a re-barrel on a 14.5″ pinned rifle usually means a new device pinned and welded to the new barrel. Our gunsmith does that work on site, so plan the two jobs together.
Q: Will this fit my carbine-gas rifle?
A: The barrel will fit the receiver, but the gas system will not match your existing parts. A mid-length barrel needs a mid-length gas tube and a mid-length handguard; carbine parts will not reach or index correctly. If you want to keep your current handguard and tube, look for a carbine-gas barrel instead.
Q: Do I need an FFL to receive this kit?
A: No. Barrels and barrel parts are components rather than firearms under federal law, so no transfer, Form 4473 or background check applies and the kit ships directly to you. Some states and municipalities regulate components separately, so confirm your own rules if you are ordering from outside Texas.
Q: What twist rate is it and what ammunition suits it?
A: 1:7, which is specified to stabilise heavy 5.56 projectiles including 77-grain match bullets, and which handles common 55-grain and 62-grain loads without difficulty. Very light varmint bullets in the 35 to 40-grain range are the only place a fast twist occasionally causes trouble, and most shooters never encounter it.
