Product Description
This is a federally regulated Short Barreled Rifle (SBR) under the National Firearms Act. Purchase requires a BATFE Form 4 transfer, background check, and $200 NFA tax stamp — now $0 under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA). Buyer must be 21+, a US citizen, reside in an NFA-legal state, and have no disqualifying criminal history. Allow about two weeks or less for ATF approval. Western Sport handles all paperwork — call 817-393-4000.
The Sig Sauer MCX Spear SBR in 6.8x51mm is the most significant new battle rifle cartridge platform available to civilian shooters in a generation. The MCX Spear is the semi-automatic commercial version of Sig’s XM5 — the rifle selected by the US Army as the Next Generation Squad Weapon Rifle (NGSW-R) following the most rigorous rifle competition in American history. In 6.8x51mm (.277 Fury), the MCX Spear fires a cartridge that was specifically engineered to defeat modern body armor at 600 meters — a requirement that 5.56 NATO and 7.62 NATO both failed to meet at the program’s extended engagement distances. The 13-inch SBR configuration produces the compact, high-power package that special operations units specifically requested: full 6.8×51 ballistics in a barrel length that operates effectively in vehicles, aircraft, and confined spaces.
6.8x51mm (.277 Fury) at 13 inches still delivers supersonic velocities well beyond 500 meters. The cartridge family has three pressure variants — the full-pressure 80,000 PSI military load (in steel-cased brass-insert cases) and the commercial brass-case load (~60,000 PSI) available to civilian shooters at standard rifle pressures. The commercial 6.8×51 produces approximately 2,800+ fps from a 13-inch barrel — significantly more energy and flatter trajectory than 7.62 NATO from the same barrel length. For an SBR that will be paired with a suppressor, the 6.8×51 platform in 13 inches provides a level of extended-range capability that no other compact platform can match.

6.8x51mm: What the US Army Chose When 5.56 and 7.62 Weren’t Enough
The NGSW program emerged from a hard operational reality: modern and near-peer threats use body armor that defeats 5.56 NATO at close range and 7.62 NATO at extended ranges. The Army specified a cartridge that must defeat Level IV plates at 600 meters — something no existing service cartridge could reliably accomplish. Sig’s 6.8x51mm solution operates at 80,000 PSI (military load) vs. 62,000 PSI for 7.62 NATO, using a bimetallic cartridge case (steel head, brass body) to handle the higher pressure. Commercial brass-case 6.8×51 loads run at standard commercial pressures (~60,000 PSI) and are available from major manufacturers. The result: a caliber that shoots as flat as 6.5 Creedmoor, delivers more energy than 7.62 NATO, and chambers in the same MCX platform that has served operators for years in 5.56 and 7.62.

FAQ — Sig MCX Spear SBR 6.8×51
What ammo does the MCX Spear 6.8×51 use?
Commercial brass-case 6.8x51mm (.277 Fury) from Sig Sauer and other manufacturers. The civilian rifle is chambered for commercial-pressure loads. The bimetallic-case military ammunition (80,000 PSI) is not recommended for the semi-auto civilian version. Commercial 6.8×51 is available from Sig Sauer, Hornady, Federal, and others.
What suppressor pairs with the MCX Spear 6.8×51?
Sig’s own NG68 Spear QD suppressor is the factory-matched option — it uses the MCX Spear’s QD flash hider for tool-free mounting and was specifically designed for the 6.8×51 pressure and bore. The SLX 762 and SLX 556 are also compatible. Third-party suppressors rated for .30 caliber at 7.62 NATO pressure levels will also work, though the NG68 is optimized for this platform.
What makes the MCX Spear better than an AR-10 in 6.8×51?
The MCX Spear uses a gas piston system vs. direct impingement — cleaner operation, less fouling, longer service intervals. The folding Magpul stock collapses the overall length for storage and transport in ways that a rifle-length AR-10 cannot. The QD suppressor system is factory-integrated. And Sig’s tooling for this platform comes directly from the NGSW military program — manufacturing tolerances are extraordinary.
Recent eForm 4 approvals have been coming back in about two weeks or less — see our NFA wait times guide for current figures.
