Product Description
This is a federally regulated Short Barreled Rifle (SBR) under the National Firearms Act. Purchase requires a BATFE Form 4 transfer, background check, and $200 NFA tax stamp — now $0 under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA). Buyer must be 21+, a US citizen, reside in an NFA-legal state, and have no disqualifying criminal history. Allow about two weeks or less for ATF approval. Western Sport handles all paperwork — call 817-393-4000.
The Sig Sauer MPX SBR is the gold standard of gas-operated 9mm short-barreled rifles. Where most 9mm PCCs and SBRs use blowback operation — the simplest, cheapest mechanism that runs fine at 9mm pressures but is rough, heavy-recoiling relative to its caliber, and harder to suppress effectively — the MPX uses a short-stroke gas piston system derived from Sig’s MCX platform. The result is a 9mm SBR that recoils like a .22LR, runs cool and clean over extended strings, and suppresses with the efficiency of a purpose-built subgun. At 6 inches with a folding stock, the MPX SBR pairs with a 9mm suppressor to produce an overall length that fits inside a standard briefcase or laptop bag — and shoots at hearing-safe levels with 147-grain subsonic ammunition.

Why Gas Piston Beats Blowback in a 9mm SBR
Blowback 9mm PCCs use the cartridge case itself — retained by gas pressure — to push the heavy bolt rearward. The recoil mass required for reliable blowback operation in 9mm is substantial: most blowback 9mm PCCs have bolt carrier groups weighing 13–18 oz. The MPX’s gas piston bolt carrier weighs approximately 9 oz — same as an AR-15 BCG. Lower reciprocating mass means less recoil impulse, faster follow-up shots, and more comfortable sustained fire. For suppressed use, the closed-bolt gas piston design also provides better first-round reliability and consistency than open-bolt designs common in 9mm subguns.

FAQ — Sig MPX SBR 9mm
What suppressor pairs best with the MPX SBR?
Sig’s MODX-9 titanium modular suppressor is the factory-matched option. Third-party 9mm suppressors with 1/2×28 threading (Dead Air Wolfman, SilencerCo Omega 9K, OSS Flow-through) also mount directly. The MPX’s gas piston system is suppressor-friendly — the 2-position regulator handles backpressure without over-gassing.
Does the MPX SBR use standard Glock or Beretta 9mm magazines?
No — the MPX uses proprietary Sig MPX-pattern magazines. The 35-round magazine included is designed specifically for the MPX platform. SIG’s 20-round and 30-round MPX magazines are also available separately.
Is 6″ enough barrel for effective 9mm performance?
Yes — 9mm generates its usable velocity from 4–6 inches of barrel with most loads. At 6 inches, standard-pressure 9mm hits approximately 1,150–1,250 fps depending on load. Subsonic 147gr runs at approximately 950–1,000 fps — fully subsonic for hearing-safe suppressed use. The MPX’s 6″ barrel is the optimal balance of compact length and 9mm velocity.
Recent eForm 4 approvals have been coming back in about two weeks or less — see our NFA wait times guide for current figures.
