Blowback 9mm PCCs use the cartridge case itself — retained by gas pressure — to push the heavy bolt rearward. The recoil mass required for reliable blowback operation in 9mm is substantial: most blowback 9mm PCCs have bolt carrier groups weighing 13–18 oz. The MPX’s gas piston bolt carrier weighs approximately 9 oz — same as an AR-15 BCG. Lower reciprocating mass means less recoil impulse, faster follow-up shots, and more comfortable sustained fire.
