What makes the 11.5″ barrel significant?
11.5″ is the standard barrel length for the US SOCOM M4A1 CQBR (Close Quarter Battle Receiver) — the SBR version of the M4 issued to special operations units. At 11.5″, the M&P15 SBR is legal for suppressor use (significantly shorter than the 16″ minimum for non-NFA rifles), easy to maneuver in confined spaces, and still provides adequate velocity for 5.56 NATO defensive/tactical applications.
