Someone built the Half-Life MP5 with the M203, and you can own one

Lance here from Western Sport. Every so often a project comes across my feed that makes the gunsmith in me and the guy who wasted a whole 1999 playing Half-Life equally happy. This is one of them: a purpose-built MP5 grenade launcher rail called the Freeman Rail (yes, named for Gordon) that lets you hang a real 37mm or 40mm launcher under an MP5, recreating the game’s iconic “bulldog nose” setup. To be clear, this isn’t my build. The video below is from the folks who designed it, and it’s worth watching in full.

Why an MP5 grenade launcher rail has to be purpose-built

People have bolted launchers under MP5s before, and the results were usually wobbly. A loaded launcher is a lot of mass to hang off a thin handguard, and most mounting solutions flexed or shifted under it. The Freeman Rail runs full-length support and locks up against the receiver, so recoil forces transfer into the frame instead of levering against a plastic forend. The launcher sits as part of the gun rather than dangling off it. There are M-LOK slots along the way for lights and lasers, because of course there are.

As a gunsmith, that’s the detail I respect. It would’ve been easy to make something that photographs well and shakes loose after two range trips. This was designed like a tool.

The surprising part: it handles better

Here’s what the video demonstrates that surprised people: the launcher isn’t just cosplay weight. An MP5 barely recoils to begin with, and adding that much mass forward flattens it out even more. Muzzle rise practically disappears during rapid fire. Heavy guns are easy guns to shoot; it’s the oldest trade-off in the business.

Fitment across MP5 clones

One smart design choice worth calling out: MP5-pattern guns are not all built to the same spec. Genuine H&K, PTR, Zenith, and the various clones all differ slightly, so this MP5 grenade launcher rail uses slightly ovaled mounting holes to accommodate the spread and still clamp up solid. The designers are upfront that a properly torqued install may mar your finish. Good. That’s the honest answer, and if a rub mark bothers you, this probably isn’t your project anyway. (For what it’s worth, we do Cerakote in-house if you ever want to make a working gun pretty again.)

The legal part, from a guy with an SOT

Now the part I’m actually qualified to lecture on. A 40mm launcher like a real M203 is a destructive device under the NFA, and each round of 40mm anti-personnel ammunition is its own destructive device on top of that. It’s ownable in many states through the proper registration and tax stamp process, and as a Type 07/SOT dealer we can walk you through that world, but do not order one on a whim. Know your state law and talk to someone who handles NFA items for a living first.

The 37mm route is the practical one for most people. It gives you the same profile and the same grin, launches flares and similar payloads, and avoids the destructive device paperwork in most places as long as you stick to legal payloads. Same look, fraction of the legal homework.

My take

I love projects like this. An MP5 grenade launcher rail straight out of a video game pulls people into the hobby through the door they actually care about, and the engineering underneath is legitimately sound. The cheapest accuracy upgrade on your rifle is the sling

Lance Rankin here, gunsmith at Western Sport in Roanoke, Texas. Customers ask me all the time what upgrade will tighten their groups. They expect me to say a trigger or a new optic, and sometimes that’s the answer. But the most overlooked accuracy upgrade on most rifles costs less than a case of ammo: a good two-point sling, set up right and actually used.

A sling is not a carry strap

Most shooters treat the sling as a way to keep the rifle off the ground between drills. Used properly, it’s a shooting aid. Tension the sling against your body and you’ve added a fifth point of contact that pulls the rifle into you and shrinks your wobble zone. That’s mechanical leverage, not comfort. Competitive shooters and the military have leaned on sling tension for over a century because it works.

What a good sling has to do

Three jobs, in order. First, retention: when you let go of the rifle to open a door, help a kid, or go hands-on with anything, the gun stays put in a predictable position with the muzzle somewhere safe. Second, stability: cinched tight, the sling anchors the rifle in prone, kneeling, and improvised positions, and keeps it pinned between shots so your follow-ups come faster. Third, a quick way out: quick-detach swivels or a fast adjuster so you can ditch the sling if you end up tangled or on the ground. Don’t skip that last one.

Getting the tension right

The most common mistake I see is running the sling way too loose, like a guitar strap. With a modern adjustable two-point, keep the adjuster tab where your hands already work, near the front of the receiver. You want to be able to crank it uncomfortably tight for a braced shot, then pop it loose in one motion to move or transition. If you have to hunt for the adjuster, it’s mounted wrong.

Prone with a tensioned sling

Here’s where people get surprised. Loop up tight in prone and the rifle stops behaving like a rifle and starts behaving like it’s bolted to you. Recoil has nowhere to go, the dot settles almost immediately, and prone stops being the slow position. If you shoot a red dot, watch how fast it returns to the target with real sling tension versus without. That comparison sells more slings in my shop than I ever could.

Two-point beats single-point

I’ll be blunt: single-point slings are convenient right up until they aren’t. The rifle swings free when you drop it to work with your hands, which is bad for your knees and worse for muzzle discipline. A two-point adjustable gives you nearly all the mobility with far more control and stability. It’s the right answer for almost everyone, which is why it’s what I put on my own rifles and what I recommend in my home defense AR-15 setup guide.

Practice the boring part

Spend some dry-fire time on carry positions: high carry, low carry, high ready. Muzzle safe, rifle ready, no snagging. If your chin bangs the stock or the sling fights your head position when you mount the gun, change the carry height or tension until it doesn’t. A correct setup disappears; a wrong one nags you every rep.

Bottom line

Before you spend $200 chasing accuracy through parts, spend a third of that on a quality adjustable two-point and an afternoon learning to use it. The M21 sniper rifle: an accurized M14 that refused to retire

Some rifles earn their place in history by being new. The M21 earned its place by being an old design rebuilt right. I’m Lance Rankin, owner and gunsmith at Western Sport in Roanoke, Texas, and the M21 is one of my favorite case studies in what careful gunsmithing can pull out of a production rifle, because that’s exactly what it was: an M14 accurized by hand until it could do sniper work.

Why the Army wanted a semi-auto

During Vietnam, the Marine Corps and the Army answered the same question differently. The Marines built their sniper program around the bolt-action M40. The Army decided rapid follow-up shots mattered enough to accept the added complexity of a semi-auto, so match-conditioned M14s became the starting point. The experimental XM21 was standardized as the M21, and it remained the Army’s primary sniper rifle for decades.

What the build actually involved

Strip away the mystique and the M21 is a recipe, and every step of it looks familiar to anyone who’s accurized a rifle.

National Match parts formed the foundation: operating rod, bolt, front sight, and flash hider, all held to tighter tolerances than rack-grade M14 components. The gas system was unitized, meaning the gas cylinder and front band were locked together with screws and epoxy so nothing shifted between shots. On a gas gun, parts that move against the barrel are the enemy of consistency, and that fix attacked the problem directly.

The stock got the same discipline. Wood moves with humidity, so M21 stocks were impregnated with epoxy and glass-bedded to keep the receiver from walking around under recoil. Barrels ranged from select GI tubes to commercial match barrels from makers like Douglas and Shilen. And up top rode the Leatherwood ART scope, whose auto-ranging reticle let a shooter compensate for distance far faster than the dial-and-hold methods of the day.

How it performed

Practical effective range ran somewhere between 600 and 900 yards depending on ammunition and conditions, with the semi-auto action delivering the fast second shot the Army had wanted all along. The rifle served from Vietnam onward, and even after the bolt-action M24 officially replaced it, M21s kept turning up in the field through Iraq and Afghanistan. A rifle that keeps getting reissued after retirement is telling you something.

What a gunsmith takes from it

The M21’s lesson is that accuracy is rarely one magic part. It’s a stack of small consistencies, from tighter parts tolerances to a bedded action that can’t shift. The CMMG BR4 Dissent: The 47-State-Legal AR-Style Rifle, From a Gunsmith’s View

I’m Lance Rankin, the gunsmith behind Western Sport in Roanoke, Texas. Here in Texas the CMMG BR4 Dissent is a curiosity, but I get calls from folks with family in California, New York, and other restrictive states asking what they can actually own. CMMG’s answer is clever enough that it’s worth a close look. The range footage above isn’t mine, so credit the creator for the shooting impressions; the mechanical commentary is me. And the usual caveat applies double here: ban-state law shifts constantly, so verify current legality in your state before you buy anything.

How CMMG engineered around the bans

Most “assault weapon” bans work off a features test: pistol grip, telescoping stock, flash hider, and so on. The Dissent simply doesn’t have the features on the list.

  • A Remington 870-pattern shotgun stock instead of an AR stock and pistol grip
  • An 870-style crossbolt safety instead of the AR selector
  • A side charging handle instead of the rear T-handle
  • A muzzle brake instead of a flash hider
  • An adjustable gas system, handy for ammo tuning and suppressors

Underneath, it still runs like a modern semi-auto and feeds from standard AR-15 magazines. That’s the whole trick, and it’s why the marketing line is 47-state legal. As a gunsmith, I respect the execution. This isn’t a featureless kit bolted onto an AR; the fire control geometry had to be reworked to make a shotgun stock and crossbolt safety function at all.

How it ran

In the video, the very first round produced a light primer strike, then the rifle ran flawlessly for the rest of the session. One early hiccup that never repeats doesn’t worry me; I see that with new guns all the time, and it’s usually break-in or one hard primer. The trigger reportedly breaks crisp and light, which matches my experience with CMMG’s work generally. Recoil is mild, the shotgun stock feels odd for about a magazine and then becomes normal, and the barrel and gas tube get hot under sustained fire like every rifle ever made.

The manual of arms is the honest trade-off. If you’ve trained on AR controls for years, the crossbolt safety and side charging handle will fight your muscle memory at first. If your background is pump shotguns, it’ll feel like coming home.

Configurations

CMMG offers the Dissent in 5.56 NATO, 300 Blackout, 6 ARC and more, with 16-inch and 14.5-inch barrels and a pile of Cerakote colors. Who should buy one

If you live in a restrictive state, or you’re a Texan who might move to one, the Dissent gets you AR magazine capacity, modern ammo, and a real trigger inside the rules, and it beats settling for a lever gun or pump shotgun you didn’t actually want. If you live in a free state and just like weird guns, it’s also a legitimately interesting piece. How to build your first AR-15: complete parts list and guide

I’ve built more AR-15s than I can count. I’m Lance Rankin, owner and gunsmith at Western Sport in Roanoke, Texas, and custom AR builds are a core part of what my shop does. Building your first one is absolutely doable at a kitchen table with the right tools and a little patience, and this guide covers every part you need and the decisions that actually matter. Fair warning: I’ll also tell you where first-timers get in trouble, because I’m usually the one who fixes it afterward.

Before you buy anything: compatibility

The AR is modular, but “mostly standardized” isn’t “universal.” Stick to mil-spec dimensions and parts from reputable makers and everything fits. The classic traps:

  • Mil-spec vs. commercial buffer tubes have different diameters (about 1.14″ vs 1.17″). Your stock must match your tube. Buy mil-spec and forget the problem exists.
  • The gas block bore must match the barrel’s gas block journal. A .750″ journal takes a .750″ block, full stop.
  • Free-float handguards use proprietary barrel nuts. Buy the handguard and nut as a system.

Tools you actually need

A vise with receiver blocks, a torque wrench, an armorer’s wrench, and roll pin punches. That’s the honest minimum. Skip the punches and try a hardware-store nail, and your new lower gets the scratched-up bolt catch area I see weekly. Total tool cost is around $150, and you’ll use them for the life of the hobby.

The lower receiver

The lower is the serialized part, legally the firearm, so it ships to an FFL like mine and transfers with a background check. My buying a gun in Texas guide covers that process. A standard forged 7075 aluminum lower is the right call for a first build; billet looks pretty but buys you nothing functional.

You’ll choose stripped or complete. A stripped lower plus a lower parts kit (trigger, hammer, safety, bolt catch, mag catch, pins, springs) is the full building experience. A complete lower skips the fiddliest pins. No shame in either. Some modern lowers use threaded pins and integral trigger guards, which honestly make a first build much more pleasant.

The barrel: the one part not to cheap out on

Your barrel decides what the rifle can do. For a first build I push people toward a 16-inch barrel with a mid-length gas system almost every time. It’s legal everywhere without NFA paperwork, it balances velocity and handiness, and mid-length gas cycles noticeably softer than carbine.

  • Twist rate: 1:7 or 1:8 stabilizes everything from 55-grain plinking ammo to 77-grain match loads.
  • Chamber: 5.56 NATO (or .223 Wylde) shoots both 5.56 and .223 safely. A .223-only chamber shouldn’t run 5.56 pressures.
  • Profile and material: a government or lightweight profile in CMV steel is plenty. Save the heavy stainless barrel for a later precision build.

Bolt carrier group and charging handle

The BCG is the engine, and it’s the second place not to bargain-hunt. Get a full-auto (M16) profile carrier with a properly staked gas key and a shot-peened, magnetic-particle-inspected bolt. Phosphate and nitride finishes are both proven; nitride cleans easier. Nickel boron is slick but only from makers who do it well. Any decent charging handle works; an ambi model is a nice upgrade if you shoot lefty or run an optic with a big footprint.

Gas system and muzzle device

Match the gas tube length to the barrel’s port location: pistol, carbine, mid, or rifle. The barrel maker tells you which. Read your ejection pattern once it’s running. Brass flying forward of 1 o’clock and a bruised shoulder mean over-gassed; sluggish ejection or failures to lock back mean under-gassed. A heavier buffer (H or H2) is the cheap fix for over-gassing, and an adjustable gas block is the thorough one, especially if a suppressor is in your future. A plain A2 flash hider is $10 and works.

Handguard, buffer, stock, trigger

Go free-float, M-LOK, about an inch shorter than your barrel. Torque the barrel nut to the manufacturer’s spec with a real torque wrench. Out back, a mil-spec tube with a carbine or H buffer and a Magpul MOE or CTR stock is the proven setup. The mil-spec trigger in your parts kit is gritty but reliable; shoot it a while before deciding whether a Geissele or similar upgrade is worth $150 to you. It usually is, eventually.

Sights and finishing touches

Budget for an optic from the start, because the rifle ships from your imagination without one. Build it, check it, shoot it

Take your time, torque to spec, and function-check before live fire: safety on, pull, no drop; safety off, fire, hold, cycle, reset. If any of it intimidates you, that’s fine.
