Why Daniel Defense builds .300 Blackout short
.300 Blackout was designed from the start to do its best work out of a barrel far shorter than 5.56 needs. A 5.56 round gives up meaningful velocity below about 14.5 inches. .300 BLK reaches close to its full potential at 8 to 10 inches. That is why Daniel Defense builds its .300 guns at 7 and 10.3 inches instead of 16 — the short barrel is the point, not a compromise.
The other half of the argument is subsonic ammunition. .300 BLK feeds heavy subsonic projectiles from a standard AR-15 magazine and a standard AR-15 lower, and a pistol-length gas system cycles them reliably. That combination is what suppressor owners are actually buying: familiar AR ergonomics, a short overall length, and ammunition that stays under the sound barrier without a proprietary magazine or bolt.
Which Daniel Defense .300 Blackout is right for you
| Model | Barrel | Configuration | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| DDM4 V7P | 10.3″ | Braced pistol, MFR 9.0 M-LOK rail, SBA3 brace | The default pick. Most velocity of the short guns and still compact. |
| DDM4 PDW | 7″ | Braced pistol, 6″ rail, collapsing brace system | The smallest package Daniel Defense makes. Truck gun, pack gun. |
| DDM4 ISR | 16″ | Integrally suppressed rifle — NFA item | The quietest option, and one tax stamp instead of a rifle plus a separate can. |
| 300S URG | 10.3″ | Complete upper receiver group, no lower | You already own a mil-spec lower and want a second caliber for it. |
Rankin Industries builds are our own house configurations on Daniel Defense components — same barrels and receivers, specified and assembled here, usually at a lower price than the equivalent factory gun.
Running one suppressed
This is the detail people get wrong most often. The DDM4 V7P leaves the factory with a 5/8×24 muzzle thread — the standard .300 Blackout pitch. It is not the 1/2×28 thread Daniel Defense uses on its 5.56 rifles, so a can you already own for a 5.56 gun will not thread on without an adapter. If you are unsure what your barrel is cut for, run it through our muzzle thread pitch lookup before you buy a suppressor.
Subsonic .300 BLK loads sit below roughly 1,125 feet per second and are what make the round quiet. Supersonic loads shoot flatter and hit harder at distance but are not hearing-safe suppressed. Most owners keep both on hand.
Buying a Daniel Defense .300 Blackout from Western Sport
We are a licensed FFL and SOT in Roanoke, Texas, about twenty minutes north of Fort Worth. Order online and we ship to your local FFL and handle the dealer paperwork, or pick up in the shop for free if you are local. Most firearms leave here the same or next business day.
Braced pistols like the V7P and PDW ship configured as pistols and need only the standard ATF Form 4473 at transfer — no tax stamp. The ISR is a suppressed NFA item and does require a stamp and the ATF wait. We handle that process in-store and can walk you through it.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Daniel Defense DDM4 V7P discontinued?
No. The DDM4 V7P in .300 Blackout is still a current catalogue item at Daniel Defense with an MSRP of $2,230. Availability moves around, which is where the confusion comes from — it sells out at distributors regularly, then comes back.
Is Daniel Defense .300 Blackout good?
The barrels are the reason people buy them. Daniel Defense cold hammer forges its own barrels in-house, chrome lines them, and the .300 Blackout barrels use the company’s S2W heavy profile with a 1:8 twist that stabilises both light supersonic and heavy subsonic bullets. You are paying a premium over a budget AR, and the barrel plus the free-float rail is most of what you are paying for.
Does .300 Blackout hit harder than 5.56?
Inside about 200 yards, supersonic .300 BLK generally delivers more energy on target because it throws a much heavier bullet. Past that, 5.56 wins on velocity, trajectory and retained energy. .300 BLK is a short-range and suppressed-shooting cartridge, and it is honest about that.
What twist rate are the Daniel Defense .300 Blackout barrels?
1:8. That is deliberately fast, so the same barrel stabilises 110-grain supersonic loads and 220-grain subsonic loads without you having to pick one.
Do I need a tax stamp for a Daniel Defense .300 Blackout pistol?
Not as shipped. The V7P and PDW arrive as pistols with a stabilizing brace on a pistol-length receiver extension, which requires only the standard Form 4473 background check. A 2024 federal court ruling vacated the ATF rule that had reclassified braced pistols as short-barreled rifles, and the government dropped its appeal in 2025. Permanently fitting a shoulder stock would create an SBR and require an approved ATF Form 1 first. We cannot advise on your individual situation — you are responsible for federal, state and local law where you live.
Can I get a Daniel Defense .300 Blackout as an SBR?
Yes, and we are an SOT so we can do the transfer here. A short-barreled rifle requires an approved ATF Form 4 and a $200 stamp. If quiet is the actual goal, look hard at the DDM4 ISR first — it is integrally suppressed, so you pay for one stamp instead of a stamp for the SBR and a second for the can.
