Product Description
The Daniel Defense M4A1 RIII Upper Receiver Group, 14.5″ 5.56 NATO, RIS III 12.5 FDE (part 23-004-14271-011) is a complete upper built on a 14.5 in. cold hammer forged Government-profile barrel in 5.56mm NATO with a 1:7 twist and a mid-length direct-impingement gas system, fitted with the 12.5 in. Daniel Defense RIS III M-LOK rail in Flat Dark Earth and an extended Daniel Defense Flash Suppressor on a 1/2 x 28 TPI muzzle thread – with no pin and weld.
The mid-length gas system is the second deliberate choice: Daniel Defense’s position is that it provides smooth, reliable cycling and reduces both perceived recoil and wear on moving parts. The barrel is Chrome Moly Vanadium steel, chrome lined, heavy phosphate coated and HP/MPI tested.

A URG is not a firearm – no FFL transfer needed
An upper receiver group contains no serialized part. The regulated component of an AR-pattern rifle is the lower receiver, so a URG is not a firearm in its own right and needs no FFL transfer and no background check – it ships like any other component. You still need a complete lower, and that is the part that transfers: see our complete lowers and lower receivers.
No pin and weld: read this before you buy
This URG’s muzzle device is not permanently attached. The barrel is 14.5 in. and stays 14.5 in. Put this upper on a rifle-configured lower and you have created an NFA short-barrelled rifle, which requires registration with a BATFE tax stamp before assembly, not after. The legitimate configurations are a lower already registered as an SBR, a lower built and configured as a pistol, or an extended device permanently attached by a gunsmith so the barrel assembly reaches 16 in. We can help with all three – we are an SOT with a gunsmith on site – so call 817-393-4000 before you assemble this upper onto anything.
The upside is that the 1/2 x 28 muzzle is yours to use: a brake, a flash hider or a suppressor adapter all thread on. See our muzzle devices and our Daniel Defense uppers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is the muzzle device on the M4A1 RIII URG pinned and welded?
A: No. This SKU has the extended Daniel Defense Flash Suppressor threaded on but not pinned and welded, so the barrel remains 14.5 in. That leaves the 1/2 x 28 TPI muzzle thread free for a brake, a different flash hider or a suppressor adapter – and it means the short-barrel rules apply.
Q: Can I put this 14.5 in. upper on my AR-15 lower?
A: Only in specific configurations. 5 in. barrel creates an NFA short-barrelled rifle, which must be registered with a BATFE tax stamp before the firearm is assembled. Lawful options are an SBR-registered lower, a pistol-configured lower, or a permanently attached device reaching 16 in.
Q: Do I need an FFL to buy this upper receiver group?
A: No. An upper receiver group has no serialized component, so it is not a firearm and requires no FFL transfer or background check. The lower receiver is the regulated part. The legal question with this URG is not buying it – it is what you assemble it onto.
Q: What is the advantage of the mid-length gas system?
A: Daniel Defense’s position is that a mid-length gas system provides smooth and reliable cycling and reduces both perceived recoil and wear on moving parts. The longer distance from chamber to gas port lowers peak port pressure, so the carrier gets a gentler shove.
Q: What is the difference between the RIS III and the RIS II rail?
A: The RIS III is modelled after the RIS II that Daniel Defense developed for SOCOM, but built in M-LOK for durability with less weight, and it still offers M203 attachment. The RIS II is a full Picatinny quad rail. Choose RIS III for lower weight, RIS II for continuous Picatinny.
Q: Does this URG include a bolt carrier group or charging handle?
A: We are not stating either way, because we do not have confirmed contents for this part number and a wrong box-contents claim on a part this expensive is not acceptable. Call 817-393-4000 and we will confirm what is packed with this URG so you know whether you also need a BCG.
