The Maztech Fire Control System (FCS) and Laser Rangefinder (LRF) were tested in the field with an HK417, ranging from roughly 250 to 730 yards. The goal was simple: see whether an integrated ballistic computer could make long-range shots faster and more repeatable, especially from awkward positions and changing terrain.
What the Maztech FCS does
Long-range shooting involves much more than memorizing bullet drop. Temperature, air pressure, humidity, elevation, ammunition, muzzle velocity, and the rifle’s angle can all change where a round lands.
Traditionally, shooters might use a laser rangefinder and a Kestrel ballistic calculator. The rangefinder provides the distance, while the calculator produces a firing solution. The shooter then transfers that information to the optic and makes the shot.
The Maztech system brings those steps together. Its LRF measures the target distance, while the FCS uses the range and stored ballistic data to calculate the hold. Instead of reading a number from a separate device, the shooter sees an aiming point displayed through the optic.
That is the main advantage: less time between spotting a target and having a usable firing solution.
Testing the system with an HK417
The test rifle was an HK417 chambered in .308, set up in a designated marksman configuration. The system is aimed more at the DMR or SPR role than a lightweight general-purpose rifle.
Initial shots at around 250 yards were straightforward. After the target was ranged, the reticle shifted to the correct aiming point. The system also continued to provide a useful solution when the rifle was deliberately held at an angle.
The testing then moved through several distances:

The most useful part of the demonstration was not simply hitting steel from a stable prone position. The shooters moved, dropped bags, worked around uneven ground, and dealt with rifle cant. That is where the automatic correction became more valuable.
Cant correction and real-world shooting
A rifle is not always perfectly level. Rocks, slopes, vehicles, buildings, and hurried shooting positions can all cause the gun to tilt. When that happens, gravity no longer affects the bullet along the same vertical line as the reticle.
The Maztech display includes a cant indicator and adjusts the aiming point as the rifle moves. During the test, the reticle shifted while the rifle was tilted, helping keep the firing solution aligned.
This does not eliminate the need for good fundamentals. The shooter still needs a stable position, a good zero, a proper sight picture, and an understanding of wind. But the system can remove some of the mental workload, especially when speed matters.
Wind is still a problem
The FCS handled many environmental inputs, but wind was the major limitation. Wind had to be estimated and entered manually during the test. Gusts became increasingly difficult at 600 yards and beyond, particularly through uneven terrain.
Future integration with a Kestrel or another wind sensor could improve this. For now, the system should be viewed as a strong elevation and aiming tool, not a replacement for reading wind.
That distinction matters. A precise range and ballistic profile cannot fully solve a changing crosswind. The shooter still has to observe conditions and make the proper adjustment.
Setup, controls, and limitations
Once configured, the controls were described as fairly simple. The system allows users to change weapons, ammunition profiles, reticle styles, display brightness, units, and the information shown in the optic.
It also includes an alignment mode to help level the optic before zeroing. After the rifle is zeroed, the system can be realigned and calibrated for use.
There are several practical limitations:
- It adds significant weight to the rifle.
- It works best with straight-tube LPVOs and may not fit optics with larger objective bells.
- The connecting cable can be vulnerable to snagging or loosening under recoil.
- The civilian LRF can be detectable under night vision when activated.
- Battery life is strong, but the system still depends on electronics.
The FCS can operate without the LRF. Users can manually dial in a known range, which is useful when laser emissions are undesirable or when target reference points have already been measured.
Is the Maztech system worth it?
The biggest issue is cost. The FCS and LRF represent a serious investment before adding the rifle, optic, mount, and ammunition. That makes the system difficult to justify for casual shooters.
For someone already committed to long-range shooting, competition, hunting, or a designated marksman setup, the capability is impressive. It can shorten the process of building a firing solution and make difficult positions more manageable.
Still, the conclusion was practical: do not buy this instead of ammunition and training. A shooter with weak fundamentals will not be fixed by an electronic sight. A well-trained shooter, however, may gain speed and consistency from it.
The Maztech FCS points toward where shooting technology is going. Ballistic data, rangefinding, environmental sensors, and augmented-reality aiming are becoming part of one system. Whether that capability is necessary depends on the shooter, the rifle, and the mission—but the field test showed that it works.
