Stripped vs complete lower receivers
A stripped lower receiver contains only the receiver itself — no trigger group, no buffer system, no stock. You supply all the lower parts. It is the lowest cost entry point into a build, and it lets you choose every component. Add a lower parts kit, trigger, stock, and buffer system to complete it.
A complete lower comes fully assembled with all parts installed, ready to accept an upper. It costs more but saves the assembly step. Most complete lowers come with a mil-spec trigger group — if you want a quality trigger, swap it before you shoot, not after you get used to the mil-spec pull.
We do AR-15 builds in-shop as well. If you want to hand-select all the components and have a gunsmith assemble it to spec, we handle that. Call for current labor rates and turnaround time.
The lower receiver is the serialized part of an AR, so it is sold as a firearm: you order online and we ship it to an FFL near you, who runs the background check. This page carries stripped lowers, complete lowers and matched upper and lower sets from Rankin Industries, Aero Precision, Sharps Bros., Daniel Defense, Angstadt Arms, Spike’s Tactical and 2A Armament. Current picks include the Rankin Industries Billet Duty stripped lower, the Rankin Industries Duty complete lower, the Sharps Bros. Gen 2 Warthog billet lower and the AR9 billet lower for 9mm builds.
Stripped or complete?
A stripped lower is the bare receiver. You add a lower parts kit, a trigger, a buffer tube kit and a stock or brace, which lets you choose every part. If a pin or spring goes missing during the build, the Oops kit covers the small lower parts that get lost most often. A complete lower arrives assembled and only needs an upper.
Match the pattern
An AR-15 lower takes a mil-spec AR-15 upper from any maker. A .308 lower such as the Aero Precision M5 needs an upper of the same pattern, and 9mm lowers are built around a specific magazine, so match the upper and the magazines to the lower. Shop complete AR uppers to finish the rifle.
Can a lower receiver ship to my house?
No. The lower is the regulated firearm part of an AR, so it ships to an FFL dealer you choose, and you complete the transfer and background check there.
What do I need to finish a stripped lower?
A lower parts kit, a trigger group if the kit does not include one, a buffer tube kit with buffer and spring, and a stock or brace. Then pair it with a complete upper.
What is a matched receiver set?
An upper and a lower made by the same maker and sold together so the finish and fit match, such as the Rankin Industries Billet Duty matched set or the 2A Armament Balios-Lite receiver set.
