Product Description
The Daniel Defense DDM4 V1 Upper Receiver Group, 5.56 NATO (part 23-050-08176) is the upper half of the DDM4 V1 configuration: a 16 in. cold hammer forged M4-profile barrel in 5.56mm NATO, 1:7 twist, chrome lined and Mil-Spec heavy phosphate coated, on a carbine-length gas system, with a 1/2 x 28 TPI muzzle thread carrying a Daniel Defense Flash Suppressor, under the 12 in. DDM4 Picatinny quad rail with the Daniel Defense forged front sight post.
The other thing that sets this upper apart is barrel length. At 16 in. it is at the rifle minimum, so on a standard rifle-configured lower it produces an ordinary rifle – no NFA registration, no tax stamp, no short-barrel question. The fixed front sight is a real trade: an iron sight that cannot lose zero or run out of power, against one that sits in your optic’s window forever.

A URG is not a firearm – no FFL transfer needed
An upper receiver group contains no serialized part. The regulated component of an AR-pattern rifle is the lower receiver, so a URG is not a firearm in its own right and needs no FFL transfer and no background check – it ships like any other component. You still need a complete lower, and that is the part that transfers: see our complete lowers and lower receivers.
Why a 16 in. URG is the simple choice
Most questions about upper receiver groups are really questions about barrel length. A sub-16 in. URG fitted to a rifle-configured lower creates an NFA short-barrelled rifle unless that firearm is registered as one or was built as a pistol, which is why 14.5 in. and 12.5 in. uppers come with conditions attached. This one does not: the barrel is 16 in., the rifle minimum. If your lower is a pistol or a registered SBR, call 817-393-4000. The 1/2 x 28 muzzle is also open – see our muzzle devices.
One thing to confirm before you order
Daniel Defense generally supplies its complete upper receiver groups with a bolt carrier group, but we are not asserting that for this part number. Call 817-393-4000 and we will confirm what is packed with this SKU; if you need to add one, start with our bolt carrier groups and charging handles.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I need an FFL to buy the DDM4 V1 upper receiver group?
A: No. An upper receiver group contains no serialized part, so it is not a firearm and requires no FFL transfer or background check – only the lower receiver is regulated. That makes a URG an easy way to change a rifle’s configuration, and the V1’s 16 in.
Q: What barrel length and twist does the V1 upper use?
A: The V1 configuration is built on a 16 in. cold hammer forged M4-profile barrel with a 1:7 twist and a carbine-length gas system, chrome lined and Mil-Spec heavy phosphate coated. 56 bullet weights as well as lighter loads, which is why Daniel Defense uses it throughout.
Q: Can I put this upper on a normal AR-15 rifle lower?
A: Yes. At 16 in. the barrel meets the rifle minimum, so this upper on a rifle-configured lower is an ordinary rifle with no NFA registration involved. 5 in. 5 in. uppers. If your lower is a pistol or an SBR, call 817-393-4000.
Q: What is the fixed front sight post on the V1 for, and can it be removed?
A: 0 FSP is built around a Daniel Defense forged front sight post, so the sight is part of the configuration rather than an accessory. It gives you an iron sight that cannot lose zero or run out of power. It is not a five-minute bolt-off.
Q: Why is a 12 in. rail useful on a 16 in. barrel with a front sight?
A: Because it puts mounting space in front of the sight. Daniel Defense’s point is that the 12 in. Picatinny quad rail lets you mount a weapon light or aiming device forward of the front sight for optimal ergonomics and a clear line of sight, rather than cramming everything behind it.
Q: Is a bolt carrier group included with this upper?
A: We are not stating that for this part number. Daniel Defense generally supplies its complete upper receiver groups with an M16-profile bolt carrier group, but we will not turn a general practice into a promise about this SKU. Call 817-393-4000 and we will confirm the contents first.
