Complete upper buying guide

An upper receiver group typically includes the barrel, handguard, upper receiver, gas system, and possibly a BCG and charging handle depending on the manufacturer. Verify the contents before purchasing. Some “complete uppers” need a BCG and charging handle to function — you need those to run the rifle.

Headspace is the critical dimension — the gap between the bolt face and the chamber when the bolt is closed. A complete upper from a reputable manufacturer has been headspace-checked at the factory. If you are assembling your own upper or combining a barrel and BCG from different sources, have it headspace-checked by a gunsmith before shooting.

Daniel Defense, BCM, and SIONICS Weapon Systems are the upper manufacturers we stock and trust for a duty or defensive application. Complete uppers are not firearms on their own, so they ship straight to your door with no FFL needed.

A complete upper receiver group is the fastest way to change what your AR does: swap the upper, keep the lower, and you have a new barrel length, caliber or rail without touching the serialized part. Western Sport stocks complete AR uppers from Daniel Defense, Rankin Industries, Midwest Industries, Spike’s Tactical, Troy, Angstadt Arms and Maxim Defense, in 5.56 NATO, .223 Wylde, 300 Blackout, 9mm and 6.5 Grendel.

What we carry

Daniel Defense MK18, M4A1 RIII, DD4 RIII and DDM4 V7 upper receiver groups (see Daniel Defense uppers); Rankin Industries uppers in 5.56, 300 Blackout and 9mm, including 16.25 inch suppressed uppers and pistol and rifle build kits; Midwest Industries .223 Wylde uppers; HM, Spike’s Tactical and Troy 5.56 uppers; Angstadt Arms 9mm uppers; the Maxim Defense PDX in 300 Blackout; and a Radical Firearms 6.5 Grendel upper.

Picking a complete upper

Match the upper to the lower first. A 5.56, .223 Wylde, 300 Blackout or 6.5 Grendel upper drops onto any mil-spec AR-15 lower; a 9mm upper needs a 9mm lower or a magazine well conversion. Then choose barrel length for the job: 16 inch keeps a rifle lower a rifle, while a 10.5 or 11.5 inch upper belongs on a pistol lower or a registered short-barreled rifle. Check whether the upper ships with a bolt carrier group and charging handle, because some are sold without them for builders who already have one.

Ordering

An upper receiver group is not the serialized part of an AR-15, so it ships straight to your door with no FFL transfer. Send us a message if you want to confirm fit before you order.

Complete upper questions

Do I need an FFL to buy a complete AR upper?

No. The lower receiver is the serialized part of an AR-15, so a complete upper ships directly to your door with no FFL transfer.

Will a complete upper fit my lower?

Any mil-spec AR-15 lower accepts a 5.56, .223 Wylde, 300 Blackout or 6.5 Grendel upper. A 9mm upper needs a 9mm lower or a magazine well conversion block, and AR-10 pattern uppers do not fit an AR-15 lower.

Does the upper come with a bolt carrier group?

Most do, and each product page says so. Some Rankin Industries uppers are listed without a BCG for builders who already have one.

What barrel length should I pick?

16 inch for a standard rifle lower. A 14.5 inch upper with a pinned and welded muzzle device counts as 16 inches. A 10.5 or 11.5 inch upper belongs on a pistol lower or a registered short-barreled rifle.

Do you carry suppressed uppers?

Yes. Rankin Industries offers 16.25 inch suppressed uppers in 5.56 and 300 Blackout, and we are a Class III SOT dealer for the suppressor side.
