Western Sport and Adams Arms grew up in the same era of the AR world. We opened our doors in 2007, right around the time a couple of friends in the Tampa Bay area were turning a bold idea into a company: what if you could convert a standard direct impingement AR-15 to a gas piston system without replacing the whole rifle? I’m Lance Rankin, owner and gunsmith at Western Sport, and Adams Arms piston products have crossed my bench regularly for years. Here’s my honest read on them.
What made Adams Arms different
Adams Arms built its reputation on the industry’s first patented retrofit piston kit for the AR-15. Instead of buying a dedicated piston rifle, you could convert the upper you already owned. The kits were priced right, and for law enforcement agencies and private owners alike, that made piston operation accessible without the cost of replacing an entire fleet or safe full of rifles. Over time the company expanded into complete uppers, barrels, and full rifles.
Why run a piston AR at all?
In a standard direct impingement AR, hot gas travels down a tube and vents right into the bolt carrier group. It works fine, but the carrier runs hot and dirty. A piston system keeps that gas up front: the piston cycles the action, and the carbon stays at the gas block instead of baking onto your bolt.
In practice, that means a cooler, cleaner-running gun. Where piston systems really earn their keep is hard use with short cleaning windows, and especially suppressed shooting, where a DI gun gets noticeably filthier and gassier. The trade-offs are real too: a piston system adds a little weight up front, adds proprietary parts, and usually costs more. What our customers told us
We sold a lot of Adams Arms kits and uppers over the years, and the feedback was consistently positive. Guys running them hard reported clean bolt carriers after round counts that would leave a DI gun caked in carbon. The COR Ultra Lite upper was a standout, addressing the weight penalty that keeps some shooters away from piston guns.

The engineering behind the piston system itself remains sound, and used or new-old-stock Adams Arms uppers are still worth picking up at the right price.
