Why 10.3″ Is the Sweet Spot for Close-Quarters 5.56
USSOCOM tested multiple barrel lengths in the 8–12 inch range before settling on 10.3 inches for the MK18 program. At 8–9 inches, 5.56 ammunition becomes seriously reliability-compromised with ball ammunition — the carbine-length gas system doesn’t have enough dwell time to reliably operate the bolt. At 14.5 inches, the M4 configuration is excellent for open environments but too long for VBSS, aircraft, or vehicle ops. The 10.3″ length hits the crossover point: reliable function with M855 and M193 ball ammunition, enough barrel to maintain useful terminal ballistics at close-to-medium range, and short enough to operate genuinely well in confined spaces.
