Product Description
This is a federally regulated Short Barreled Rifle (SBR) under the National Firearms Act. Purchase requires a BATFE Form 4 transfer, background check, and $200 NFA tax stamp — now $0 under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA). Buyer must be 21+, a US citizen, reside in an NFA-legal state, and have no disqualifying criminal history. Current ATF approval times vary — see our NFA wait times guide. Western Sport handles all paperwork — call 817-393-4000.
The Daniel Defense MK18 SBR is the closest civilian equivalent to the USSOCOM MK18 Mod 1 — the short barrel rifle that has served with US Navy SEALs, Army Special Forces, and Marine Raiders for over two decades. USSOCOM’s MK18 requirement called for a 10.3-inch 5.56 platform that could be operated in confined spaces, aircraft exits, and vehicle operations where a 14.5″ or 16″ barrel is a liability. Daniel Defense built and supplied MK18 components to military contracts, then made that same technology available commercially. The DD MK18 SBR is not a tribute or replica — it uses the same cold hammer forged barrel specification, the same RIS II rail geometry, and the same Mil-Spec+ finish that DD applies to its government contract rifles.
At 10.3 inches, the MK18 barrel sacrifices approximately 150–200 fps of muzzle velocity compared to a 14.5″ M4 barrel, but gains a complete overhaul in close-quarters handling: a shorter sight radius, lighter overall weight, and a platform that genuinely clears doorways, vehicles, and confined spaces with no sacrifice in reliability. The $0 NFA stamp fee under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act makes the Form 4 SBR registration cost negligible — the MK18 SBR has never been more accessible.

The RIS II Rail: SOCOM Standard, Not an Afterthought
The Daniel Defense RIS II is not a standard AR handguard fitted to the MK18 — it is a purpose-designed free-float rail system that was developed at USSOCOM’s request and has been fielded on US military MK18s since 2002. The RIS II’s continuous Picatinny top rail integrates with the upper receiver rail for a single uninterrupted optic mounting surface from rear sight to muzzle. Side and bottom Picatinny rail sections provide full accessory mounting. The free-float design eliminates barrel contact for consistency-improving effects on accuracy. The RIS II is aluminum, lightweight, and battle-tested in ways no commercial handguard has been.
Cold Hammer Forged: What It Means for a 10.3″ Barrel
A 10.3″ barrel sees significantly higher pressures per shot than a 16″ or 20″ barrel — the reduced dwell time means gas is still at higher pressure when the bolt unlocks. Cold hammer forging compresses and aligns the steel’s grain structure during manufacture, producing a barrel that is harder, more wear-resistant, and longer-lived than button-rifled alternatives under these higher-pressure conditions. DD’s CHF barrel specification is the same for its 10.3″ MK18 barrels as for its 16″ M4 barrels — no corners cut for the shorter platform.

FAQ — Daniel Defense MK18 SBR Brown
What is the difference between the MK18 and the DDM4V7 or other DD rifles?
The MK18 is DD’s SOCOM-heritage short-barrel platform: 10.3″ barrel, RIS II quad-rail, NFA SBR registration. It’s optimized for close-quarters handling above all else. The DDM4V7 and similar rifles use DD’s modern M-LOK handguards, are civilian-legal at 16″ without NFA registration, and are built for general-purpose use. The MK18 SBR is specifically for buyers who want SOCOM geometry, the 10.3″ barrel length, and the RIS II rail system.
Can I add a suppressor to the MK18 SBR?
Yes — the MK18’s 1/2×28 muzzle threading accepts any compatible suppressor. A 5.56 suppressor pairs naturally with the 10.3″ platform. Western Sport stocks compatible suppressors — Send us a message to discuss pairing options.
